Women in Combat

The expanding opportunities for woman in the military has now brought us to the point of having the first female POW.
I am curious to know how you folks feel about women serving in the military, particularly in combat situations.

i think its ok. Women's Lib. shouldnt be allowed in one area, but not in another. If you can handle the same standards as men(read: no lowering standards for women) you should be allowed to serve.

They've got a brain, 10 fingers, 10 toes and they can fight.

I don't look at them any differently than a man when it comes to war. If they can go through the same training as a man, I don't look at them any differently. Same goes for that female hostage.

If that's true, then I would agree with you.

Sadly, it seems like that's rarely the case.

If what you said were true, I'm sure that the U.S. military wouldn't be handing them keys to multi-million dollar F/A-18's and Apaches to fly in combat

I'm against it.

I think a woman hostage is more valuable than a male one... and there are certain potential war crimes that make a woman more susceptible in my opinion.

I definitely don't think they should be drafted.

My cousin is a female fighter pilot in the Gulf right now. She flies F-16s and I'm very proud that she has the opportunity to do things like that. It really is what makes this country great.

There were woment POWs in WWII.

MSNBC Article

They point out that during World War II, 88 American servicewomen were taken prisoner of war by the Japanese when they invaded the Philippines, and that these women showed no less ability to hold up under brutality and desperate conditions.

you asked for it:

I'm am a little undecided...

I have no problem with women being in the military in the sense that they should be allowed equal treatment, they have a higher tolerence of pain than men do, and I'm sure they are quite capable of getting the job done.

When it comes to female POWs... she knew the risk, she accepted it, and now she has to face it.
But yes, i do feel sorry for her as i do any POW.

However, I would not want to be serving next to a women while in combat. You see men do stupid things... like try to impress women. Or, if in a hand to hand situation.. with my size i may be better able to defend myself than the average women would be. So, I would be tempted to sacrifice my own ability to defend myself in order to defend her.

Another thing is that if i were to go down in action... i would feel more comfortable having someone my own size (which would probably be a male) to get me out of it instead of a female (who tend to have a smaller stature than most men.)

If they want to kill, and die, and everything else let them. As long as we are not lowering standards for women anyhow. We want to be fair after all.

I would rather have a male next to me in a combat situation. If I get shot, he has a better chance of dragging my sad azz out of there.

where did you read that? just wondering. anyways yeah i'm for it, if she knows the consequences of her actions, by all means i support women in combat roles. women as POWs isn't a nice thought considering the sexual abuse that may be involved, but like i said before, if they know what could happen and still accept the duty, more power to them.

I have to disagree with you on a womans ability being related to size. I am a 5'4" female. I have worked the floor of a pretty rowdy male client psych unit for years. I have found myself in situations where I was alone and had to deal with it. On the flip side, there are some male staff I would never trust to have my back. That's what it's about. Can you trust the person next to you to back you up?

Just my 2 cents 🙂

The sad thing about the current woman POW (and the other 2 missing in action women soldiers) is that they were not in combat roles. One of them is a chef and the other is a supply clerk (I don't know what the other one was). Same with the guys -- they are mechanics -- not combat soldiers.

Yeah, girls seem to be more whimpy in this regard but then I remember something called childbirth -- I don't think any man would be able to endure passing something as big as a baby through their oriface and not cry.

Those two statements seem contradictory, the second one being quite sexist. There are many women that can complete the training some men cannot.

The military should have one standard that applies to men and women. No distinction.

PS. My wife wears combat boots to work.
