Women Dominate the PC Scene

Females aged between 25 and 54 make up the largest group of PC gamers.

That was one of the many conclusions found in a new report from media analysis group Nielsen.

In December last year, females in the 25-54 age bracket accounted for around 29 percent of all PC players, while males in the same age category accounted for just over twenty percent.

The report added that its results incorporated hours spent playing the card games that are bundled with Microsoft Windows operating systems. Because of this, Nielsen states that the most played game on the PC is Solitaire.

The report did not measure PC usage outside of America, meaning a whole host of cultural and economic factors prevent this from being a truly global analysis.

Haven't touched a MMORPG in years. I tried one and never played another one since. Guess I'm part of the "5%" 😛.

Lonely housewives that play online gambling or dabble in windows XP's multiplayer draughts game or whatever is where they get that figure from. Real games arent female dominated.

Aha, a bit arrogant that i typed that before even clicking the link but now i clicked it look.

There ya go, online draughts, solitaire too.

lol, how did I miss that.. Correction. Of the ones who play games other than Solitaire, i'm guessing 95% play either WoW or Guild Wars.

I don't know about that. If you widen that to super-casual games like solitaire, mah-johngg, scrabble, etc, then maybe. That said, of MMOs, I'd think games like Second Life would appeal to females moreso than GW or WOW.

Yeah it appealed to this female here who ended up getting divorced over it lol.

Most of the women I know, if they play games at all (most of them do not) it is either online poker or The Sims. I got my Mom started with online poker not long ago.

Ah, yes.. the sims. I'm just gonna take out what I said in my original post since it's obviously a stupid assumption.. lol

We have lots of girls in our WoW raiding guild.
We had a decent number of them in our TF2 clan too. We advertised clean, mature servers so it might have helped to attract more girls who'd otherwise be turned off by the asshats who frequent online multiplayer games.

If you're including Windows default games like Solitaire and Hearts, and online Yahoo games then yes, I'd believe that women "dominate the PC scene."

However, if you're talking about actual gaming, then it's quite the opposite.

I dunno about that, if you excluded casual gamers, The Sims, WoW, and GW, well that's probably 98% of female gamers.

It's fun to generalize anyways 🙂

The title should be "Women Dominate the PopCap PC Gaming Scene" >_>

Although I like playing solitaire on my phone when I have nothing better to do. I'd rather get a nice (preferably free 😛) version of Sudoku, but that's been a rather uphill battle.

It's like rocket science getting second life to run correctly, such a buggy pos. I'd be more inclined to think Wow is more popular for casuals.

Nope. I bet its simple little online flash games, which probably make up about 90% of modern PC gaming.

The big games like shooters and RTS's are practically dead compared to console games.
The only thing we really dominate is MMO's and stupid flash games.
I bet there are millions of housewives hitting those things every day.

Yeah, I already edited that out of the original post because it was clearly a bad assumption on my part. Those two games probably make up most of the "hardcore games" stats for women, but i'm assuming WoW takes a big chunk of the PC market anyway, whether it's males or females.

It's solitare and other games that come with windows that put them on top. I just edited the main post for clarity.

I'd say a big chunk plays Sims

You mean girls are turned off by rabid nerds who salivate at the very possibility of a second X chromosome coming into their nerd-circle?

SHIT! I'm outta luck then.

To be sure - A pretty large % of "females" in MMORPGs aren't female at all.

Heh...you know what GIRL stands for when you're playing an MMO right?
