Woman Last Seen In 1999

MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. -- The skeletal remains of an elderly woman were found Friday in her home, more than seven years after neighbors last reported seeing her.

Ann M. Simmeck apparently died of natural causes, according to an autopsy conducted later Friday. She would have been 79 years old.

The autopsy could not determine the year and date of her death, believed to have occurred several years ago inside her split-level ranch home.

The home, which bears a strongly worded "no trespassing" sign, still had working electric service. Calendars and food inside the freezer were dated 1999 and earlier, neighbors who talked with investigators told The Hartford Courant.

Officers visited the property Friday and found Simmeck's skeletal remains after a family member became concerned about Simmeck's absence and called police. Gee thanks for your concern

"The last time I physically saw her was 1998, 1999," said Mary Carlson, Simmeck's neighbor since 1997. ??? WTF

Simmeck's family members could not be reached Saturday morning.

Neighbors said Friday that Simmeck's estranged husband used to mow the lawn and care for the yard, but told them a few years ago that he didn't have keys to the house and never went inside. So how nasty did the yard get after 5-6 years of no mowing or no weed control????

State police detectives are investigating, and the state medical examiner's office will continue to try to pinpoint the year and approximate date of her death.

I wouldn't have noticed either. I've lived at my current house for 10 years and only spoken to one of my neighbors ever.

Wow.....

That's amazing. Nobody noticed the smell? Or did she have her A/C cranked?

:Q

Still had working electrical service? WTF? I guess its possible that her SS was automatically deposited, and her bill automatically debited.

How bizarre.

I would make fun of her, but I"m not sure she has thick enough skin to handle a joke.

How did her electrical stay on? Who was paying the bills, getting the mail, taking care of the yard, the house, etc.? Maybe she lived out on some ranch out in the boonies or somthing.

Lots of elderly people have utilities paid for with a bank draft. If the yard was getting taken care of too, there you go..

I'm not surprised that nobody came to visit or anything. A lot of people don't get along too well with their neighbors...I know that's the case for a few neighbors I've had in the past. Some people just put up no trespassing signs everywhere and stay inside all the time. The thing I don't understand is how she still had working utilities (ie electricity from the fence) and how the mail didn't get totally filled up. Even without personal messages, there must have been some bills and junk mail to fill up her box.

Honestly, I wouldn't know it if any of my neighbors died in their homes. And if their lawns went to sh!t? Well, there's no HOA where I live, so lots of lawns look like utter sh!t anyway. Dunno about mail, I bet the post office just abandons delivering and holds on to it or returns-to-sender.
