I've heard also that scientists are starting to think that many allergies are caused because people aren't introducing their children to the food at an early enough age.

peanut allergies are serious business (seriously).

yea serious for 0.000000000001% of the population

yet all of us suffer because of it

The lady at the OP's work is an idiot, no one is going to guess a pineapple allergy from saying 'hold the pineapples', but the general insensitivity of the board regarding food allergies is a bit bother some.

I'm allergic to peanuts. I have no problem with you eating peanuts or peanut products as adults, but in a daycare setting where kids don't wash their hands, play with the same toys/supplies I can see how it could be an issue. Don't even get me started on insentive children who literally try to force peanut products down other kids throats not knowing the sensitivity of the situation.

If you feel like killing those who can't eat peanuts then fine, send me to the gas chambe but just come out and say it instead of being pissy about your kids not being able to eat PB and J sandwiches at school/daycare.

DING DING DING

That like people with nutty (HAA!) peanut alergies - they always make a point that there can't be ANY peanuts anywhere near they food.

i cant imagine how you're at fault here.

when i worked for a pizza place, we'd have requests from either muslims, hindus or jews (oh my!) to use a new clean blade to cut the pizza.

guess how many times i actually did that....
now, if they explicitly said 'i have a allergy to pork or beef' or something i probably would take the request a bit more seriously.

No, really. Because parents are so worried about what their children are eating up until the age of 3-4 that they don't introduce them to foods that children several years ago (20+) were introduced to at a young age. When I was a young kid, I ate pretty much anything my parents made, assuming I had the teeth for it.

Yeah my gf has a peanut allergy and we make it pretty clear when we go eat

"If you put peanuts in this food, she will die"

Religious food restrictions are only in your head.. if you don't know about it, it's like it never happened.

Well, seems clear to me. She did say no pineapple, but by using the same knife without cleaning off the pineapple from the blade, she got pineapple. Common sense is supposed to come into play here somewhere. She should not need to disclose her medical problems to get no pineapple in her salad.

........

Yes, yes she should.

The people with food allergies should police themselves. No one is entitled to eat out.

Fucking schools down here have banned peanut butter, a freaking cheap and healthy staple that tolerates our Florida heat/humidity well.

If the lady has a food allergy she should have been clear she was a genetic defect instead of just sounding like the asshole in front of me today trying to get hamburgers with cheese, lettuce and tomato for the same price as just a hamburger.

Exactly. Common sense would dictate that you let the person preparing your food know that you are allergic to that particular item.

well, i did wipe the blade off. which i'd do anyways after cutting almost any pizza. so, that was not special for them.

going to get a new clean one?
yeah, right. okay. sure, i'll get right on that.

Common sense??? How's this for common sense: if I'm allergic to pineapple, and I stand there and watch someone use a contaminated blade, even if I assumed they understood 'no pineapple' to mean 'I'm allergic to pineapple', I'd say something, not eat the known contaminated food then complain about it when it made me sick!

Unfortunately, those of us with food allergies don't always assume the potentials of cross-contamination. I'm not justifying her attitude or yours, but it happens. Hopefully, she is all right, but I'm curious to know if she was carrying an Epi-pen or not.

People with food allergies should just eat at home. Expecting restaurants, bakeries and such to cater to your allergies is ridiculous.

My wife wants to start a coffee shop and bakery, but with all the fucking lawsuits by people with food allergies, it hardly seems worth it.

"Caution, this bakery may serve products made with flour, milk, and/or peanuts."
You'd THINK something like that would be enough to protect a business, but sadly, no.
People with food allergies should just eat at home and leave the rest of the world to enjoy their foods.

peanut allergies can be very life threating. kids are stupid and dont realize that and it could cause a bad problem. if my kids did that because 1 kid at school had a bad allergy to peanuts i would have no problem with it.

no no its not,

OP, i would have not thought she didnt want pineapple due to an allergy. like you i thought she just didnt like pineapple

ive developed a cantalope allergy. I love it but i cant eat it anymore. last summer i ate 3 slices from a fresh cantaloupe from the fields near my house and in 30 minutes my throat was constricted and my tongue felt really funny.

Yes, yes she should.

i agree with Ns1.

since when is a food allergy a "medical problem" that should be kept a deep dark secret?
inform food service people of your allergies every single time.

my boss is allergic to nuts. he carries an epi-pen with him all of the time. (which is what pineapple allergy lady should be doing too).
i've noticed that every time the office has went out or went on vacation together he always-always-always mentions his allergy to those getting his food for him. he doesn't just say, "no nuts on my sundae please."

no no its not,

i think it is. ive never had a cantaloupe allergy before until last year. and ive eaten a lot of cantaloupe over my lifetime. also what about milk? we all drink milk when we are 1 years old....

some studies are just bullshit and this is one of them.

no i dont feel like killing you because you cant eat peanuts, i fee like killing the law makers that make it so i cant eat them because someone someplace might have a peanut allergy

also if you have a kid who is allergic to them and is stupid enought to eat them after being told not to, well then thats his own fault

its not the kid who has the allergy that the school should worry about its the other stupid kids who dont understand how dangerous it can be to the kid who has the allergy to nuts.

"hey lets sneak a nut in joes lunch and see what happens"

next thing you know the ambulance is at the school and joes parents are getting called...

dude we are talking about kids not your workplace lunch room.

i know a couple of 4th graders who have a nut allergy and they are very careful in what they eat. they are the only 4th graders who i have seen read the ingredients on a package just to make sure it is ok to eat.

there are ways to prevent shit like that happening that dont involve banning all peanut products

those with food allergies should have to adapt to a world where the majoirty can eay XXX item fine, Not the other way around

Such as? We can't even stop kids from pushing large plastic toys up their nose. Now we can somehow stop them from coming into contact with a incredibly common food/ingredient which also has an incredibly strong allergic reaction in an environment of little kids who don't know that inhaling dust can cause his windpipes to close?

While I believe that this woman should have been more forthcoming about her pineapple allergy, I find it hard to believe that it made sense to you to use the same knife for all the fruits. Anytime I've worked in food service or food prep and had something requested to NOT be included we made sure never to mix a trace of that ingredient with the final product. If she wants 0 pineapple, and you're using the knife from the pineapple than you're not giving her 0 pineapple, are you?
