Violet D'Mello, 60, was wrestled to the ground by a captive big cat after she entered an enclosure at a wildlife park where tourists are invited to pet the animals.
The shaken housewife, from Aberdeen, was on holiday with her husband Archie, 64, when the terrifying incident happened.
She told today how she was thrown to the ground as two cheetahs mauled at her head, stomach and legs.
Mrs D'Mello, who was rushed to hospital after the incident, said: 'It was terrifying and happened so quickly.
'One minute I was in the enclosure with the cheetahs and the next it was biting at my head.
'I was thrown to the ground and had to play dead while it mauled my legs and stomach.'
A guide at the game park in the Indian Ocean town of Port Elizabeth managed to pulled the second cat off Mrs D'Mello, but even as he did so, the first cheetah rejoined the fray, pining the Scot to the ground and biting and gouging her legs.
It was only when a group of park visitors worked together to pull the two animals off her that Mrs D'Mello was able to make a dash for the petting pen's gate.
Amazingly, Mrs D'Mello's husband Archibald had been outside the pen throughout the ordeal from where he captured these astonishing pictures of the attack as it happened.

WTF? If that had been my wife, the first thought in my mind wouldn't be to take pics. I'd probably piss/shit my pants then run to her.

If I get mauled by a cheetah and my wife is standing there with a camera I sure as hell better get pictures out of the deal.

Curious question:
As the male, you might not expect your wife to do much to aid in the rescue (I too would want pics: a story is awesome enough (like a shark bite), but pics? holy shit awesome).
But what if your wife was the one in the cage, and you had the camera? Would see prefer you to rescue? Or take pics?

Good thing it was a cheetah and not a lion. Cheetahs are a lot smaller and less aggressive. But very beautiful cats.

Unhelpful husband is unhelpful

I asked her. She said that she would like to be rescued but if I could manage to keep shooting with one hand that would be even better.

Thought this was gonna be a dumb broad goes where's she's not supposed to thing but they actually encourage people to get into the cages with the animals there? WTF?

wow, lol, there are all kind of people in the world... some how don't mind petting wind cats even if they are not their pets, and then there are some that have the presence of mind to take pictures while their spouse is being possibly killed... wow, this world is full of surprises...

He got some pretty good pics.

Completely in focus, so we know he was rather calm and not shaking much. 😀

I'm going to open up a sea world type sea park but I'm going to let people swim with 15' great white sharks, killer whales, and baracuda. It will be awesome!

So if I ever visit South Africa, I'll remember to ignore the part about it being a "petting zoo" if it is one that proclaims such.

These creatures, no matter how "tamed", have not been bred for domestication and are nor your ordinary petting zoo inhabitants.

Bad idea all around...

Those poor poor cheetahs, they're just misunderstood. They need love to cure their aggression... or perhaps a steak.

Yeah, it doesn't matter how cute and cuddly they are or how much they look like large versions of your domestic kitty cat, they're wild predators who have evolved to kill and eat other mammals. Treating them like goats at a petting zoo is idiotic.

Actually the more I think about it I realize that your typical house cat would do the exact same thing to a person if they were a little bit bigger.
