Not so much for the "friends" dragging her out there and leaving her but for the motorist letting her use the cell phone but not giving her a ride even though she had one shoe

is anyone else bothered by the motorist's actions?

It's New Jersey, it's night, and based on her "friends" names, she might have been Hispanic.

Would you let her in your car?

guess it depends on what kind of mental state, but I've refused to give rides to people who looked homeless, shifty, possibly drugged up, etc even in the middle of the winter, though I'd call a cab for them (frequent occurrence when I worked nights in downtown Newark)

I wonder wtf that's about.

It has nothing to do with terrorism, if that's what you're thinking.

Oh I had a gut feeling it had nothing to do with terrorism. 😀

If this is surprising to you, then you need to lookup research on rat colonies and how they react to overpopulation. Besides, haven?t we trained our society that taking care of those in need is government?s responsibility?

Might have given her a ride to a bus or train station and enough money to ride home. When you go to a party you should have some emergency spending money. Otherwise you could be arrested for vagrancy.

Since 9/11, a lot of people get their panties in a twist whenever the word "terrorism" or its derivations are used. There have been threads in the past about people being charged with making terroristic threats, and some people believed that such a charge was a 9/11-induced overreaction. A lot of people don't realize that the law has nothing to do with "terrorism" as we think of it, so I just wanted to make sure that was clear. 🙂

Please be more specific about your prejudices. You mean latina. Hispanic is a broader term that includes people from Spain. You're not afraid of white people from Spain, are you?

Whoever drove off leaving her in the cold like that should face similar charges to a hit and run, she could have died. At the very least he could have demanded she emptied any pockets that could contain a weapon (she only had a dress on to begin with), then let her sit in the back until police or someone else came by if he was uncomfortable driving with her in the back. I'm guessing she burned his license plate number into her memory.

I guess this may be a cultural thing

Living in Hawaii it's hard to understand why someone would leave them in the cold, but I can understand that picking up someone in Honolulu may not carry the same risks as picking up someone in New Jersey

Not to mention the coldest it gets here is 68

He already gave her a phone, what else was he worried about? It's hardly an effective ambush approach to stand in the cold, presumably in a state of exceptional discomfort and shivering and then fake a phone call on a cell just to get a stranger to carry you, a single girl, in a car so that you can go off and rape or mug the guy isn't it?

I see many here assuming that the other motorist was a male. I couldn't find any indication of the motorist's gender or age.

It might that the motorists was legitimately concerned about their own safety (or if young were under orders NOT to pick up strangers etc).

IMO, no good to rush to judgement about the motorists given the lack of details.

EDIT: Instead of blaming this motorists, it might be a good idea to wonder why the h3ll this woman called her attackers instead of the police. Because fo her own error in judgement she waited over an hour in the cold. The story says the motorists stopped by "soon"; so if she had called the police I imagine should have been picked up pretty quickly.

What I'm curious about is why she called one of the people who threw her out there in the first place, and what was that conversation like? If she was freaking out and screaming at someone on the phone, I probably wouldn't want to give her a ride.

Her friends already suck and since people are similar to the company they keep she probably sucks, too. That's the only reason I can think of! If my friends ever do that to me my reaction will be markedly different.
