On March 13, the 26-year-old aspiring nurse was killed in her apartment, shot at least eight times by Louisville police officers who officials have said were executing a drug warrant, according to a lawsuit filed by the family, accusing officers of wrongful death, excessive force and gross negligence.

According to the lawsuit, filed April 27, Louisville police executed a search warrant at Taylor’s home, looking for a man who did not live in Taylor’s apartment complex and had already been detained when officers came to Taylor’s apartment after midnight. Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, was also in the apartment and, according to the lawsuit, shot at officers when they attempted to enter without announcing themselves. The lawsuit alleges that police fired more than 20 rounds of ammunition into the apartment.

Man with legally owned gun fires on several police who attempted to execute a warrant by entering his apartment without identifying themselves. Cops fire back into the apartment, killing his unarmed girlfriend.

Isn't this exactly why the right thinks everyone should own a gun, so we can defend ourselves and our homes against armed intruders?

Oh, and this is exactly why no knock warrants are such a bad idea. I understand why the cops don't want people flushing their drugs while they are outside knocking and identifying themselves, but that is a better outcome than this.

To top it off, they charged the BF with assault for firing at unidentified intruders

Yup, charged him with first degree assault and attempted murder of a LEO. Seriously fucked up. How would he know they were officers if they're not announcing themselves.

Yes, and I'm sure Kentucky has a castle doctrine meaning it's a ridiculous charge. They have to prove he knew he was firing on cops instead of burglars.
They do.

But they'll still run his name through the mud. I'm sure they'll have found some drugs somewhere in the apartment, and they'll assassinate his character like they assassinated his girlfriend.

I knew she was black before I even clicked on this thread.

Edit: And a lot of people in charge think it's fine to die for the War on Drugs™. If they didn't it would change. On an unrelated note, many of those same people now want us to die for the economy. But not them, of course.

there was one of those killings here 25 years ago, but I will never forget it. A mother was shot in the neck and bled out in front of her children, for the wrong address. The wrong address SMH.

They were looking for someone else. I don't think they knew she was black.

Another tax funded home invasion gone wrong. Why don't they triple check location and recent arrests before executing these busts? Maybe have a ride along observer with lower adrenaline levels to triple check for accuracy. Hopefully someone high up is listening to both the officers and the third party to give an abort mission call if something doesn't jive.

Did they get the location wrong? I can't really figure that out because there are information gaps here:

Who was this guy they were there to detain? Did he have any relationship with the occupants of the apartment? Why did they think he was there? Why did they not know he was already in custody? Was this a search warrant or an arrest warrant? Maybe they had information he had cohabited there and were there to execute a search of the premises to get evidence on someone they already arrested?

I have no idea. We need more information. I will say though, that as it stands this looks bad for the cops.

Or just don't do them at all. A no knock warrant should be forbidden. It isn't worth the cost of a mistake.

Yes, I agree 100%. No knock warrants have proven to be a recipe for disaster. As we've seen in the past, LEO's will take "Intel" from people trying to reduce their own charges, not validate, and murder law abiding citizens. Fully protected, feeling justified. I submit no knock warrants should be eliminated and the war on drugs follows it.

I'm sure everyone involved in the mix up were held accountable and tried for manslaughter, correct?

I really wouldn't blame members of that community if they felt the need to form a militia and hit the police station first - just to protect themselves.

Police home invasions need to end. ANYONE defending their home from unknown assailants needs to be given immunity.

Who is arguing for illegal gun ownership? You present a straw man here. There should be real penalties of many many years for such offenses. But it is useful to use a false construct to attack people who are responsible and lawful owners it seems, as you frame your statement that way. The Right leaners I know would never be for this nor use such an argument is this situation.

But the police fired at unidentified targets, no knock or not. Acceptable collateral damage? Seems that a lot of people should be in prison for this.

No! They need to suffer the same fate. They have kids. They shoot your daughter, you shoot their daughter. Even better if she's under 13. All those hopes and dreams for her get smashed, just like yours. And they'll have to live with that...

Forever.

You know what?
Lawsuits dont fucking work. The victims rarely have the means to get a competent lawyer. Competent lawyers rarely want to sue the police for real money. They rarely go to court. The courts rarely find in favor of the civilians.
We need federal oversight and serious reform in law enforcement. Thats never gonna happen under president Cheeto, and I doubt it would happen under president Joey McFeely.
