Actually when dealing with canines I should think greaves would be the most helpful. Followed by leggings, then gauntlets, then perhaps pauldrons. A chest plate is unlikely to help you at all, not a chain shirt.

In Gypsy camps it's not unheard of for them to pit a man vs a Mastiff or some other huge dog in a fight to the death. While the men fighting in these situations aren't exactly typical males. They're very far from a skilled MMA type fighter either. A grown man in a mano a mano situation against a dog should be the victor. If a Pit attacked me, I'd obviously get very banged up, maybe even partially crippled for life, but I wouldn't be the one left dead.

I highly doubt a little 120 lb gypsy guy would cage match a rabid Mastiff to the death with no weapons of any sort. Spartans wouldn't do this either.

If they did that, they'd run out of men to procreate with the women in the village.

You have bears and killer whales that have been trained with "hands & brain". It doesn't mean that humans can grapple with a non-domesticated wild thing hand-to-hand.

It's highly unlikely the early wolf pets were acquired as adults and were almost certainly picked up as pups. An abandoned wolf pup would not be a significant challenge for even a child to handle so spears would not be required.

Raise them and the selective breed them and 10,000 years later you have a Beagle.

So allow me to educate you. My post wasn't and was never intended to be an analogy. It was a post about perspective. You are more likely to win the lottery than be killed by a pitbull. That's a fact, and we all know how people around here scoff at the odds of winning the lottery. Yet certain people in here rant on and on about pitbulls. Ironically, some of them are the very same people who laugh at those spending money on a lottery. Go figure.

If you want an analogy as well as more perspective, OK, here's one - an automobile is far more likely than by a pitbull to kill or seriously injure you. I don't imagine that will stop anyone from driving/riding in vehicles though. I don't see people calling for a ban an automobiles for that reason either.
