It was lunch time at work and we decided to head out for some Indian roti. While two of the guys were deciding what to order (saag paneer or shrimp), a small argument erupted between them about what would be denser and more filling - peas or shrimp.

After a minute or so, someone jokingly suggested we ask Wolfram Alpha, and we all had a good laugh at such a silly idea. Except someone actually did that and we got shown.

Wolfram is a computational knowledge engine NOT a search engine. It's not a web crawler and hence can only draw results from it's preselected / precompiled database of knowledge (mostly math). Try asking it the "average gestation time for pigs", now do the same with google.

It may be the thing that's "in" nowadays but it's certainly not the "best new" thing. Google still is FAR more useful/practical for the average person when it comes to day-to-day information searches. It's also not too bad for highly technical queries.

If someone uses Wolfram Alpha for highly technical queries, it's highly likely that this person is cable of finding the answers to his questions using Google as well!
