Here I sit, looking at my brand new MSI RS480M2-IL, a nice shiny AMD Athlon 64 3000, and a little stick of 512 Corsair.....:D

Alas....

my case and hard drive do not arrive until tomorrow :(

That's like me today. At least you're looking at it. I'm at work while my VNF4 Ultra, Winnie 3200 and dual 160GB hard drives are sitting at home freshly delivered waiting to be all hooked up.

Do what I do, read the manual from front to back twice. I will not be able to power up my system until my memory arrives and I can't use it until two weeks until my DVD writer comes in.

Reading the manuals, doing the online surveys for a chance to win little things, ect. to kill the time, lol...

Hey, it looks like my cpu was made this year(2005). Did they change anything on it from past .90 939 3000's or nah?

Dude, how do you know when your CPU was made? When I get home, that's the first thing I'm going to check. Unfortunately I don't know what all those letters and numbers on the heatspreader mean.

The 2 numbers found in front of CBBID is what I was told tells you what year it was made. Not sure how to tell the month or anything else.

Same here, that's why you buy the CPU, mobo, and GPU last.

You just described my next system to a T! :D

Let us know what you think of the board and onboard graphics!

I'm hoping it is decent as I'm waiting until I get my tax return back to buy a 6600gt and a Hauppauge 150 :)

I'm thinking about putting one in an antec Aria, and sticking my X800 XL in until a good Overclocking RX480 board with the ULI SB comes out. It should make a nice little HTPC after that with the onboard.

This is something I'm pissed at myself for and kind of wish I would have held out for another board: Overclocking abilities.

Why the heck does this board lack zero ability to overclock?

edit: Just looked at that Antec. That thing is very slick!

I dunno...(maybe they don't want to show up their NF4 line:p). Anyway, its supposed to be pretty solid and stable, and the price is right. They probably fiqure mATX users aren't overclockers, and I'm a little concerned about heat in the small case anyway. Maybe a BIOS release will offer some overclocking features?

hmm.... those benchmarks I just looked at don't get me all that excited anymore. :(

The onboard graphics may be GREAT for an IGP, but still kinda' weak. About the speed of a Radeon 9200 standalone card - maybe a touch more.

I think I'd rather get a better board that either allows a cheaper system or better overclocking.

ASROCK makes a board that's 754 and 939 on the same board. Some overclocking, but not spectacular there (better than the RS480 board!) but that would mean I can buy a sub-$100 Sempron 754 and upgrade to 939 later without having to buy a new motherboard and reload Windows all over again. The savings could get me a decent video card like a Radone 9600Pro that would run circles around the RS480's IGP.

Its not for gaming, thats for sure. The MSI board is definately not an overclocking board either.

For me, I need a little SFF for my Dad, so I thought I'd try the MSI since there are no other boards to choose from. He won't need any gaming performance, and he won't need it for a few months, so I'll be able to fully put it through the paces.

I want to try the onboard driving a CRT along with my X800 XL to see how they work together, and see if I can live with a mATX board. I could end up making a few simple MCE rigs if its nice and stable platform.

I think you need to build your rig for today, the upgrade path may not look so sweet when you are ready to drop a 939 into that ASROCK board. Aren't there any decent overclocking 754 budget MB's? seriously, for gaming, you shouldn't be thinking less than 9700/9800pro at this point anyway.
