Woah! Rambus considering going after NVidia?!

No fkloster I didnt miss any point you missed mine. Even if Rambus owns valid patents they had NOTHING to do with the development and production SDRAM! All they did was sign the papers of some key technolgies that are also used in RDRAM thats it. They dont have patents on SDRAM they own a few patents on some technolgies used in SDRAM and RDRAM. They didnt develop SDRAM they had nothing to do with it. Noone stole their technology. All they have is a peice of paper on a few technologies that they ran and patented. In my mind its clearly leaching when you are trying to get money for free. Thats exactly what they are doing, they are taking what every other company is making and saying give me money! The fact is they didnt develop SDRAM.

Royalties and patent disputes are just daily fair in the tech biz. This ain't nuthin' new. The car analogy was interesting because there was that fella who invented the intermittent wiper. It's not quite the same because it is an optional component and not integral to the car. But people are willing to pay for that IP. Prolly that patent has expired by now but maybe there were ways around it by other means. I'm sure there are often several ways to do similar things without violating patents but most companies just want to deal with their day to day business and passing along a dollar or two in extra costs to their customers ain't really a problem so long as everyone else has to do it too.

I just don't get why people are so infuriated over RAMBUS. If anyone is the real culprit it is Intel for creating the monster. Anyhoo, what have any of these corporations done for you out of the goodness of their black l'il hearts? Don't shed a tear for Hyundai, Samsung, Micron, Intel, AMD, et alli they don't give a rat's squirt for you. Just care about the extra $1 (which isn't really worth caring about after all).

My problem with Rambus is lately their actions have gone past defending their claimed patents. When they have a complete stranglehold on the DRAM, memory controller, CPU, and video card industries, who all rely on SDRAM, Rambus can do whatever they want; how the hell does prohibiting Intel from making a P4 SDRAM chipset defend Rambus' SDRAM "patents". Some may call this business, but others will call this a monopoly and anti-trust violations. If and when Rambus starts to deny a company the use of SDRAM with a product through their licensing agreements, they will go down in flames. It happened with Microsoft, it will probably happen with Rambus.

I find it hard to believe that every mem manufacturer out there would be stupid enough to blatantly use technologies belonging to another company and never caring about the possible results.

And either way, at this point, I hope Rambus goes down in flames even if the pantent claims are valid, for the good of the industry.

Is there any workaround which can be used in the complete SDRAM technology? Are the patents that RAMBUS holds (supposedly) of vital pieces of the SDRAM? If not, I would love to see SDRAM manufacturers simply create a workaround for these RAMBUS patents and just go on like RAMBUS doesn't exist.

Rambus is not &quot;cleaning up in court&quot;.
They have not won a single case in court.
Your are referring to OUT OF COURT settlements.
They have dropped one suit already in the U.S.A. because they thought the judge might rule against them. They were consequently hit with a judge shopping judgement.

Let's keep the facts straight.
