Ok, so now I know how it feels to be a newbie again.

I decided to upgrade my system to a Barton 2500+1, 512 pc2700 (got the mem wrong, shoulda went 3200), Abit NF7-S and a new 160gig IDE drive.

My problem is this. I went to install straight to the 160gig using my same old method that I've used for years and I got an invalid system disk message. I ended up having to use my old 5400 drive which runs like a pinto next to this new drive and that is where I'm at. I need to figure out how to format and use this hard drive from a cold start. I'd like to format it again and use it exclusively minus this old drive, which is chugging along and lagging me out in SWG. I couldn't figure anything out with this in the bios at all. It drove me insane!

I even tried setting it up with the serial ata kit, that turns the IDE into a serial ATA drive and I still can't get anywhere.

I have the c drive mirrored on the large drive. Is there any way I can boot up using it now instead of the old one?

Can someone help me? Is there something online I can print out that will guide me through this?

And last but not least, it's high time I got new tools for formatting my pc's, can ya help me find that?

I'm definitely in need of new knowledge as it looks like technology is outgrowing my methods of formatting.

I appreciate your help in advance!

Your message is very convoluted. What is this format method you speak of and what did you do with these two drives and if, which, and how did you format? Did you just plug in an old hard drive without format/fresh OS install?

Please clarify. Thx

No, it's a long story but I got it fixed. It was simple, the 160gig wouldn't show up being set to master. I actually had to remove the jumper (which is also master) to get it to identify. That solved all of my problems. So I don't have to catch up to technology just yet.

I was loopy when I wrote that... hence...

Convoluted, almost had to look that up, it's been a while since I've actually used that word. Try ten years. :)

Also, thank you for answering! I do appreciate the assistance.

You didn't mention the make of the drive. Western digital I am assuming. WD has 2 different master settings. One with slave present and the other single drive. Looks like you figured that out though.

Hit the nail on the head, yes it is a WD, and yes, I did figure it out, the hard way. I don't recall ever running into this problem, but all of my drivers were old prior to this one.
