Woah.. just gave some blood for the first time

What an interesting experience...

I have never given any sort of blood before so I did not know what to expect. I wasn?t giving to give, I was giving because I needed to have some tests run.


So the nice doctor flicks my arms for a bit to find a good vein.. he found it on the right arm. Then he ties the tourniquet and the fun starts.

First my hand loses feeling. Okay.. I expected that, no problems. Then I get jabbed with the needle thingy that the test tubes get hooked up to.. still everything is okay. But then they start drawing the blood. My whole arm starts to go numb, then my vision starts to go black. Eventually I feel like I should cry but I have no energy left in me to do much of anything other then put my head down and close my eyes and mumble "I feel like I am going to pass out". The two people in the room whip out some ammonia and make me take a deep breath of it. Ouch. They then walk me over to a table/bed thing where I lie down seeing everything spin. When I try to get up to leave again everything starts to go black and I sit my butt right back down.

Well, at least I got some free juice out of it.

This ever happen to anyone else?

Ive donated over 10 or so times in my life and ive never had any problems. Some of my friends have, but not many.

Since my spinal cord injury, I can't sit up right away...I need to slowly inch myself upright or else i get dizzy, my ears start ringing, i lose my energy, seems like my eyes start hurting, then my vision gets all blotchy then I pass out because not enough blood gets up to the noggin.

Same thing happens to me when I donate money to the liquor store.

Sounds like what I just went through...


I guess this means I can never donate blood for real.. if 3 vials does this to me imagine what a whole pint would do..

I've given blood numerous times in the past as well and never experienced anything like that. Some people get queezy at the sight of blood though. How much blood did they take?

Some peole have it and some don't. I know when I gave blood last, i got woozy also. Could be a million different reasons why. Immune system low, getting sick, didn't eat enough the day before...etc... Just be glad its over and you'll be fine.

Me too, I've given blood 13 times myself. That's 1.6 gallons!


LordJezo, that is very strange especially considering they take a lot less for clinical tests compared to when donating. I know what you look like too and you're not particularly underweight.

Donating blood is good . I also have an organ-donord card and I have thought about singing up as bone-marrow (spelling?) donor.

Haven't given up as much blood as before recently, because don't know a good place to do so yet (I moved recently). They say I should donate as often as possible because I have good blood. high hemoglobin-levels or something like that. Never had any problems with donating. Just have to remember to take it easy afterwards.

I am not allowed to give blood unless it is needed for a test.. lived in Europe for 4 years so now I am at risk for mad cow..

That sucks. I always get golf balls, umbrellas and things when they have blood drives at my company.
