The weird thing is, the last time I saw him, he was right out of boot camp, and he was telling me how I should put a stop on my career, and join the military because it was the "right thing to do".

The other thing is, he was a real A-hole in high school. Am I wrong for not really feeling bad about it just because I knew what he was like in the past? I mean, I don't wish that kind of thing on anybody, but I just kind of shrugged it off.

Considering he made the ultimate sacrafice for our nation, I'd say that your opinion of what he was like in high school shouldn't really matter.

You have no obligation to feel bad. Just keep in mind he died in service to this country. You can at least respect that.

agreed, no matter how big of a jerk he was, he diddn't deserve to lose his life. Should you feel bad? not neccisarily, but you should probably feel sorry for him/his family.

I find that Anandtech is similar to my hometown community. Something like 1-2% join the military. Its not even an option to most, so why bother selling? Thats the recruiters job, not mine. Of course if you had actual interest and questions, I'd love to answer.

Agreed. IMO there is no shame in not joining with the current political climate. When my country requires my service I will go, and gladly, but not for a half-thought-out imperialistic venture halfway across the world.

And all that being said, I wish his family peace and healing in what is probably one of the hardest events of their lives.

Ok, let's put a stop to this. Continue in P&N if you want.
We're losing track of the main topic. I feel sorry for your friend and his family, and humbled by his sacrifice.

No, no need. My Dad spent 35 years in the Air Force, and after hearing about his stories in Vietnam. I'm pretty content sitting behind my desk. Your fighting in Afghanistan though, right? At least you're fighting the right war.

I know your political thoughts probably much differ from my own, but I had to say that.

EDIT: Sorry, just noticed the above posts. I can't stand going in P&N, it's a madhouse in there. So I will stop posting anything political in OT.

:) Just offering my thoughts in response to another poster's offered thoughts, I wouldn't take it too personally on your account.

Ok, so theres nothing that can be done about troops being sent over there. The current POTUS has made up his mind and some 130k troops will be there for a few more years, that means that someone has to actually be the feet on ground. All politcal views aside, what makes so more special that you dont have to be over there yourself? Because your at a good college or good job, or just started a good family? You dont think everyone else has the same opportunity?

Well, why should you feel really bad about it? It sucks but it's not like you were close to him. I guess if you want to beat yourself up over it then go ahead but that's not going to accomplish anything.

No no, not at all. Everyone has a "choice" (at least for now). Actually, I always told myself that if college didn't work out, I was going to follow my fathers footsteps and join the Air Force. But, college worked out well for me, and I got a good job. I'm not going to leave that behind to fight a war I don't believe in. Simple as that.

Not everybody finds appeal in subscribing to an institution where they train you to kill, myself included. I have personal problems with combat and war, although they do happen (more frequently than they should, perhaps)>

Join the Air Force, Coast Guard, or Navy. Get a technical job.

Do you really think that everyone deployed believes in the war(s)?

You missed my whole point. Read my blurb again. If I was already enlisted I wouldn't have much of a choice, I understand that. But the circumstances being what they are.....

So all the people that are deployed were just riding out their time in the military expecting no deployments when there have been several combat tours within the last 15 years? And theres quite a few people who joined after 9/11. I'm sure that they had a good idea what they were getting into.

I go back to my first statement, what makes you so special that everyone else has to go through war and you dont because you already "have a life"?

I'll wrap up a 8 month tour in Afghanistan in like 2 months now and still feel like I havn't gone through a fraction of what a lot of guys in Iraq are going through.

Jeez, your flipping out on me when I didn't really say anything offensive. It's not that I'm "so special" I just had an option.
