Well, i was going to take a shot of "vodka." And it was the strongest f-ing vodka i had ever had. It felt like my chest was on fire. Then i remembered my uncle is in from the country (farmer) and he made the stuff. I linked the 2 together and didn't take another one.

Anyone got some funny stories about it? Love to here em.

i thought it was plain illegal, unless you used it for fuel.. ?

Hmm.. I don't think so. Why would it be?

Is making beer illegal?

Then again, it's also illegal to grow certain plants.. so I guess it wouldn't surprise me.

Edit: Oh, maybe that's it. Maybe it has to be for "fuel" use and not actual consumption.

There are limitations as to volumes made per year per person.

At least that holds true for wine and beer. Not sure about hard stuff.

Heh..

I guess it's good that those laws are around, so you don't have people making 500 gallon batches of brew and trying to sell them to stores or something, but c'mon.. If you want to set up a still in your back yard, nobody is going to stop you. As long as you're using it for personal use, the law shouldn't give a sh!t.

The mere idea actually pisses me off. So are we required to do everything their(whoever they are) way? We can't be resourceful by ourselves?

That just doesen't seem right to me. If I want to make alcohol for myself, I should be able to.

Yeah, I know.. but I'm talking personal vs. commercial production here.

Is it really against the law for me to set up a still in my back yard and produce some 200 proof alcohol for whatever I want to use it for?

I'm not allowed to be resourceful? I'm forced to buy it from a store?

haha.. Yeah, right. They can kiss my ass if that's the case.

ATF says otherwise.

You can make your own beer.

You can make your own wine.

You can't make your own liquor.

Don't ask me why.

EDIT: Probably for TAX reasons.

Well I think they are still known as the ATF, but I remember reading that they no longer handle firearms (I believe.)

Oh well.

I don't really give a sh!t.. lol

I've always wanted to setup a still. Maybe if I ever do, I'll bother to get the correct alcohol-fuel permit.

It won't be my fault if some of it slips into my orange juice. ;)

In the US its illegal to just own, much less operate, a still.

I think that Homebrewers can produce no more than 100 gallons / year per person above 21 per household. 100 gallons is approx 40 cases.

i believe the rationale behind prohibiting home distilling i that if your still gets too hot, you produce a kind of alcohol that can cause seizures and blindness.

That's a crock of sh!t.

Apparently, there are quite a few people that agree with me after a quick google.

Alcohol is a natural resource. It does not "belong" to the government.

Producing methanol is a concern, but it doesen't happen when the still gets too hot - you just have to make sure you're using the correct fermentables to produce ethanol.

Methanol actually has a lower boiling point than ethanol, so if you've got stuff that produces methanol in your mash, you will end up with methanol in your spirits.

Totally depends on the still.

I would hope that it would be pretty close to 200 proof after 3 runs.

I am sure it was at least 150, unless it was a piece of garbage, or maybe a wood-fired still.

no, i think he has a friend out in the country that does that sort of stuff now that he is retired. Apparently a hobby so he spends a lot of time on it and he is very good at it.
