WMP10 let you rip to WMA as well as MP3.
I don't seem to have a mp3 option... Do I need a plug-in? Is there one where I don't have to shell out $10?

it's there. click on tools -> options -> rip music, under format you can choose mp3 and compression rate

Windows Media Player Download
Setup detected that you are running: Windows XP

I'm running 2k. Anyone got a 2k version of WMP10, or is it XP only?

I wouldn't mind betting that it works for XP & 2000, using the same file. Worth a try? :)

just downloaded it.

for music, my verdict is:

WinAmp 5 > Media Player 10 > WinAmp 2 > WMP9 > * > iTunes

the thing that seals WinAmp for me is that I don't notice it's there. it doesn't take up a noticeable amount of CPU power, and it doesn't take up any space on my taskbar. all I notice is that I double click on a file and it plays. WMP is just too bulky for my tastes.

I want to help make Microsoft software and services even better by sending Player usage data to Microsoft

Okay, who would ever check that box during installation?

Who thinks the media configuration utility doesn't send the data anyway?
