Mr. Pressure:

isn't MPlayerClassic different from WMP10?

the issue is that, of course, i have WMP10, in fact, i re-installed it again as per the suggestion of someone else. But, alas, it still does NOT open automatically when i double click on the avi file :( Again, i only hear the sound. The ONLY way it will open up properly is to right single click it, then select Open With...then choose WMP10.

while it's not the end of the world, this is not "normal" behavior and i'd like to find a resolution.

thanks again for continuing to help me troubleshoot.

someone recommended MPlayerClassic. do the others here like it more than WMP10?

ugh. troubles...

so it does open with Open With? Oh ok, you didn't tell me that. :) Go in Windows Explorer, tools menu, Folder Options. Click the file types tab. Find AVI under the extensions column header and select AVI. Click Change, click Windows Media Player, and click OK, OK. Then try it. Replace AVI with whatever extension you were using, but I thought you were using AVI. mplayer2 is NOT media player classic. It is an older version (6.4) of Windows Media Player. It's on every Windows 2000/XP, possibly 9x PC.

Mr. stknight,

i did that and it already says: details for AVI extension: Opens with Windows Media Player, so i made NO changes. did i do the right thing?

when the avi file was downloaded and saved to my hard drive, the extension was already simply avi, so i assume that i do not need to change anything there either, right?

so now what :( ? i don't need to change anything under the Windows Explorer/tools/folder options/file types, etc. NOR do i need to change the file extension on my avi file since it's already .avi when i saved it.

you know what i mean? i'm sort of lost again. seems like i don't know what my next step should be.

the way to workaround this is to go to the bottom of my task bar, click the WMP icon, when that opens up, go to file and select my avi from there. that way, i'm forcing the wmp to open up first, then file and open my avi. of course, this is not desirable as it is much more cumbersome than simply double clicking on the avi file that i want to see. there's no good reason why it should work for me. i'm baffled.

maybe it has something to do with me having two LCD screens and something's confusing the nvidia card or windows dual screen management??

Change the extension association for AVI. Just select windows media player again, click OK, and that should fix it.
