WMP codecs corrupted. How to fix?

For some reasons WMP doesn't seem to be able to play movies which have been encoded using certain codecs.

Would removing the codecs manually and letting WMP download and install the codecs again fix it? If so, where can I find these codecs and do I remove anything else but the codecs themselves?

It would have been nice if I had been given the choice whether I wanted to reboot the PC or not, though
