WMP 9 library problem

I can't get WMP9 to search my mp3 directory to add files to the library. It will search the directory I tell it and add files, but won't recurse the subdirectories. So what's broken? It also can't find any album info for any of the albums I've tried. Does it only work if you've ripped the music with WMP?
 
Sorry I wasn't specific. I did try 'add by search', it behaves the same way as the 'add folder' command does, and uses the same dialog box.
 
In the media library tab make sure you have the folder added that you want to monitor and make sure you tick both update options at the bottom of the screen.

WMP will find media info for any media file, not just for ones ripped by it.
