I disagree. There is a product on the market called Powerscribe. It is made for physicians to use for digital dictation. It does real-time voice recognition as well as responds to commands. Granted, it is expensive, and the processing hardware comes in a handheld microphone for $500, but it is still available if you want it.

i meant real voice commands. like if i ask my computer to "copy all picture files containing jessica alba to the thumb drive",...it does it. more complex commands and stuff, not dictation.

No, i don't think in the foreseeable future (at least 20 years) computers will be fast enough. I remembered having this exact same conversation when the PII just came out, and we were wondering if processors will ever reach 1Ghz. Do you need 1Ghz in W98? No. But in XP, it helps. 4ghz might not seem like it's needed for everyday things, but that's today. Who's to say tomorrow OS, which will require a dedicated GPU, internet that is a lot more interactive since broadband is becoming more popular, won't require something like a 4ghz CPU.

We know how the next OS, Longhorn, is going to be like. But do we know what the OS after that, or the one after that, will look like? MS had the right idea with 'Bob' if anybody still remembers him... who's to say in the future, we might not have a 'Bob' like character on our computer, with completely realistic features, facial expression, vocalization, and speech and even visual recognition. Somebody who can 'speak' our tasks and appointments to us, read aloud our emails for us, or datamine a search for us. Show a computer geek 15 years ago what computers are like today, and what we can do with them, and they probably won't believe you. I know staring at the DOS prompt on my CGA monitor i certainly wouldn't have.
