Witnessed a terrible accident today.

So there I was, sitting in the left turn lane of Brookhurst and Trask waiting on the light to turn green so I can get on the freeway, all of a sudden I hear "Sccccrreeeeech, THUD!!!" to the right of me, naturally I looked (the parking lot to the right you're seeing has been renovated to accommodate an EZLube and car wash). There was an old man behind an old Buick facing cross traffic, seems like he was backing up and hit something hard (he was in the EZLube parking lot). His wife was standing outside of the car, the poor old lady could barely walk, making some sort of gestures for him to stop...

The next chain of event happened in slow motion, as I sat there with my jaw on the floor, I saw the old Buick lunged forward, hitting a white Camry on the rear quarter panel, split a truck and a Nissan pushing the Nissan smashed on to another car in the second lane, the truck in the third lane careened to almost hit the right side or my car. There was a Camry in front of me that got broad sided, picked him up tossed him side way into a light pole and pinned the driver door shut while missing the front of my car by inches. The Buick continued onto the opposite side of the street, hopped the curb, almost hit another light pole and stopped by a wall.

The weirdest thing was the expression on the old man's face, he didn't have that panic look, or was having medical difficulty... I couldn't tell you exactly what went through his mind, or didn't. I would even go as far to say that he had a grim determine look on his face.

His wife could barely walk, and was helped by an Asian chick towards his car. I was busy trying to get a shocked old guy out of his Camry that got pinned against the light pole. I left after that.

Which gets me to the question of how old is too damn old to drive? When are people starting to become a liability for themselves and others? Should we have mandatory check-ups for old people over certain age to make sure they have can operate something as deadly as, say, an automobile?

There isn't a set age at which people should stop driving. But elderly drivers should be tested every year to determine if they are 'road-worthy'. Unfortunately, this kind of law is unpopular with the elderly and they vote.

How about we make it so that they have to pass, from scratch, the driving test every other year once they start claiming medicare? I mean if they're going to live off of us we ought to at least know they won't be killing any of us with their cars.

My grandfather was telling me that one of his old friends, 88 or 89 years old recently got his license renewed and all he had to do was take the written test, which in fact he took home for his wife to help him with since he was having trouble reading the paper!

Would that also apply to anyone on welfare?

There is some quality Korean/Chinese/Vietnamese food where you live. I love garden grove. Nowhere else in the nation is there such awesome, authentic asian food.

More testing plus massively higher fees to obtain a license and license a car please (for everybody, not just old people ... why are we so far behind on congestion charges and smart tolls in this country?).

I hadn't thought of it, but why not?

because senators and reps who want to stay in their spot don't want to piss off their constituency by voting yes on taxes.

Clearly you do not understand what that term means. A system by which the access to limited resources (roadways) is controlled by free market principles, such as using price to move down the demand curve, is hardly "fascist."

i think that they should start testing EVERYONE yearly after 55. but of course they won't do it.

Don't discriminate old people, they have the right to commit manslaughter just like everybody else.

Too many stories of this happening.

My mom is responsible, she just hit north of 60, recognized that her reaction time was diminishing, so decided to limit her driving.
