Within your household, how many computers?

2 decent desktops (one in my office and one in my "lab")
1 old desktop (this will go in my garage at some point to power my CNC)
2 old laptops (1 is delegated to server duty)
2 tablets (iPad2 and Nexus 7 - use both daily)

For about the past year, I've done most of my causal (read-only) web browsing on the tablets.

Wow that's serious. What do you do for a living ()🙂

NOC tech, I used to be a server sysadmin though, but I found the NOC position more attractive. I like playing with server stuff at home, but not so much in a business environment, too much politics. 😛 Right now I don't have much going on but once this project is all done I plan to start saving up so I can build one or two VM servers. I want to get back into some of my coding projects and always good to have proper test environments and what not. I have a pic log here of the work I've been doing:

Currently:

1 desktop
1 laptop
1 server
2 smartphones
1 router
1 printer
1 tv set top box (Appletv, so not a real HTPC)

Going to be adding another desktop soon (wife is setting up a home office) as well as a tablet, and probably a new router and server. The current router is just the verizon fios thing, so we'll keep that as the gateway to the ISP and add a real router and switch, and actually probably add a new wireless access point too.

Hoping to get one of those mini server racks like some of you cool guys have. 🙂

I think so... I know that I still have a few Linksys WRT-54G's in storage that I used to play around with DD-WRT and Tomato firmware.

I had one I was using as a wireless bridge in my condo up til we moved earlier this year. Current setup in the house is that I don't need it for that or anything else but it's ready to come out when needed.

How much does it cost in electricity each month or how much power is it pulling? Must be a fortune.

2 Desktops
2 Laptops
1 Box running WHS (thinking of moving to a Synology box from this)
1 Printer
2 Smartphones
1 Router
2 Switches

Why? The desktops I'm not sure about anymore. They may not be replaced at the end of their life. Laptops for convenience. Printer is obvious. WHS box for backups and remote access. But the old version of WHS on it won't do a bare metal restore of Win 7 or 8 and probably not Vista, yes my wife's desktop is still on Vista ,so it will no longer fulfill a part of what I put it in place for. Backups and remote access yes.

One wireless router covers the house and the switches are for ports for the WHS box, my house alarm panel, Dish DVR and Blu-Ray player, etc.

1 Wii that hasn't been on in years
1 360 that hasn't been on in a year and a half

*shrug* define "computer"

If you just count anything that pulls an IP address, my housemate and I between us have over a dozen.

2 Laptops
Gaming Rig (Mine)
Media Server/NAS
iPad
2 iPhones
Nintendo Wii
Roku
BluRay Player
Nintendo 3DS XL
Nintendo DSi
2 Printers

That's just what's on. I also have a TI-99/4A under my bed, and a modded mITX rig that's on the desk at work. It will be coming home tomorrow though, since I'm changing jobs.

I'm surprised to see this many HTPC's

I ditched mine years ago when devices like Roku's became common/cheap (my living room TV is a smart TV with hulu, netflix, and plesk... roku's on the bedroom and office TV's). I've got a bunch of locally stored files, but I just use Plesk to manage those so I can watch them on my Roku's (which don't support DLNA for god knows what reason; I'd much rather just use DLNA than Plesk)

just seemed like more hassle than it was worth to have to worry about managing multiple desktops (and the noise, heat, and power usage factors)
