Within 20 years will gay marriage be legal

This is not a place to discuss whether gay marriage is good or bad, but merely will it happen within 20 years.

I believe that the current conservative government is more related to war issues than gay issues, and that within 20 years democrats will have regained enough influence to see this occur.

Civil unions count as marriage, if you believe they will become legal, vote yes.

Recent polls have shown that about 80% of those polled are against gay marriage even though we know that ~48% voted liberal in the election so I wouldn't hold yout breath.

I hope we find some remedy for gay folks. My sister is gay, and it makes me sad that she is currently not able to marry or form a union with a significant other.

Gay marriage is a cultural "Got to Get To Understand It" issue. As american culture becomes mroe aware of gays as human beings with hearts and souls not as perverted christ hating demons, as the right wing would have us, the swing towards aceptance will occur. This happened with interraccial marriage and all the past civil rights movements. Ironnically I think the whole christian uproar will bring it about sooner as it brings constant media attention to it and keeps people talking about it and trying to get both sides of the perspective. But that is just history's take on it.

Oh and I would like to add a ban on gay marriage does not stop two men from getting married. It does prevent it from being legally recognized but they can still get married in the eyes of God, there are plenty of churches that will sanctify a marriage of this type.

Legal in Canada already, so it should be happening soon I assume.

Thought it still had to go through parliment? I know PM Martin came out and said he was for it because going against it would makes gays "second class" citizens.

It has nothing to do with "human beings with hearts and souls" or "christian uproar". Marriage although not originally so (depending on the definition) has become wrapped up with religion. Where are the seperation of church and state people on this arguement? If anything a "marriage" performed by a civil authority should be designated a "civil union" whether it is gay or straight. Then recognize the religous "marriage" as such with the same rights as a "civil union". If the religous people want a "marriage" they won't be able to get it from the state.

I think it will remain a states rights issue.

I hope it will anyway.

So a state would have the right to not recognize the union from another? What about employers within that state. I say put it on a national level no matter which way it goes.

Then again we would have to do the same for other marriages like "common law".

I don't think so, many people felt the same way about marijuana a few decades ago, and that hasn't happened either. The right wing has a large influence and it's growing.

First if you want to mention Marijuana you should do some research on drug laws and not just the "war on drugs".

Secondly why does everything have to be "right wing" if it doesn't allow for total an unconditional acceptance of everything? As noted above opposition to gay marriage is not just a "right wing" agenda. Most (60+%) do not support it. What should we accept next to reach enlightenment oh wise lib?
