With Rijndael coming soon, why care about RC5 anymore?

Article about the new encryption standard Rijndael here

Will RC5 encryption be used after Rijndael is released?

If not, why continue with the RC5 contest?

Because after Rijndael is adopted, who will give a rats a$$ about the weakness of RC5?

So why waste Team AnandTech's time, energy, and resourses on a contest that may now be totally, absolutely, completely, 100% irrelevant?

Is it GOOD or BAD to lead in the stats of an irrelevant project?

Seriously, is it time to abandon the RC5 contest and switch to another project?

I hate to slap, Zap - but is this really the kind of thing we want to discourage people about right in the midst of an attempt to get some action going?

Not whining, just questioning the tone, and the timing.

Hey, I've been 100% for RC5 and the growth of Team AnandTech, but I'm seriously looking for an answer to the question posed.

Are stats the ONLY reason RC5 is being done?

What other reason is there?
All others are now moot.
RC5 has pretty much proven it's self against a brute force attack.

If there are no valid reasons for competing in RC5 other than stats ego, then how valid is the TA's claim of being the worlds' best distributed computing team?

How is pride to be gained in irrelevance?

I don't know about anybody else, but I've never given a rats ass about cracking the code. For me, it's all about: TEAM + COMPETITION = FUN.

DanC, I don't know if I could dedicate myself to another multi-year dc project. This one has just completely worn me down, and considering that new standard will be even tougher to crack than RC5, I would really discourage such an undertaking. Once we overtake the #1 spot overall in rc5, I'm going to switch to projects that take <6 months to complete. I'll run for the hills if d.net even mentions a Rijndael cracking contest, as it would be an absolute monster.

...

<< Once we overtake the #1 spot overall in rc5 >>

At which point the DPC's smack us down shortly thereafter...

quote from website:

<< Even a machine capable of breaking the old DES standard in a second would take some 149 trillion years to the proposed AES's lowest level of security, Jim Foti, a mathematician with the institute, said in an interview. >>

DNet did the last DES contest in about 24hrs, so that would be very long term project :Q 😛

I have been doing RC5 because I thought there was a valid reason to, as well as helping TA kick in the stats.

My reason and line used in my assimilations has been:

"Help show the weakness of current internet encryption by joining the RC5 challenge."

With the advent of Rijndael that can't be said.

I haven't yet learned how Rijndael encryption works, but :

<< Even a machine capable of breaking the old DES standard in a second would take some 149 trillion years to crack the proposed AES's lowest level of security, Jim Foti, a mathematician with the institute, said in an interview. >>

Wouldn't our team have an easier time assimilating new members and keeping old members if our main project had readily identifiable, nondubious merit?

That said, what would happen if we:

1) Completely withdrew from RC5;

2) Determined and undertook a different main Team project;

3) Issued an explaination and challenge to the DPC (and whomever) to best us in whatever project that is.

If the "Emperor (RC5) has no clothes" then why shouldn't we accept that, and have our "Team + Competition = Fun" doing a project with merit?

< took too long to type this to see Nukefarmer's post 😱 >

ZapZilla, if you think RC5 is a waste of time just stop running it and join another project. Just please don't bash the effort. All that's accomplishing is hurting Team AnandTech. This thread is doining nothing but showing lack of unity among the team, which will be a big turn off for anyone contemplating joining any of the projects.🙁

There are many worthy new projects coming out. Pick one that you think is a noble effort and go with it. If TA doesn't currently have a team running that project, start one. Be the founding member and recruit like crazy, but please don't try to convince current TA members to abandon their project just because you don't agree with it anymore. I don't think you'll get very far with that approach.

You mean there was a point to RC5 other than beating the DPC's ??? 😀

There's also no point to running a 100 meter dash other than beating the other guys, it's not like SMG 😛 is waiting for the winner at the finish line, but people do it...

🙂

ZapZilla, you're definately right in that RC5 has no true scientific purpose. RC5 as an encryption standard is dead, and it won't be used for anything in the future. However, that isn't going to stop most of us from cracking RC5.🙂 For the most part, we're doing it because we want to finish RC5, thrash the /, and of course the lovely stats.😀 Besides, someone has to keep the DPCs occupied.😛

Having participated in RC5 previously, myself, I came to the conclusion that I wanted to join the efforts of another project(mine happens to be SETI, which may take longer than any of the other current or future projects COMBINED!!)

However, in defense of our TA RC5 effort, I don't believe that we should abandon it just because some new standard may be coming along. All of my kidding aside, Team Anandtech should continue on with the RC5 project because we want to show that we're committed to the entire project, not just someone's views on it's validity. The arguement could easily be waged that SETI isn't worthwhile because we haven't found any aliens yet, but that isn't going to stop the efforts of many of us.

blade_47 nailed it when he stated that you should consider another project and not try to convince others that their primary project is a waste of time.

On a more positive note, perhaps you can convince the other teams ahead of us(with your line of reasoning) to abandon their RC5 efforts so that TA can take the prize and the glory of having won the competition in the RC5 project.

ZapZilla

There is new distributed effort at Entropia. Current project is FightAIDS@Home. Short description 🙂

FightAIDS@Home makes it possible for anyone with a personal computer to convert its idle power to an extraordinary lifeline to help researchers accelerate the discovery of drugs to fight HIV and AIDS. Through FightAIDS@Home and Entropia's donation of massive computing power and bandwidth, The The Scripps Research Institute's scientists and researchers at the Olson laboratory have the ideal computational system to model the evolution of drug resistance and design drugs necessary to fight AIDS. It takes only moments for people to download the free software and do their part to directly advance critical AIDS research.

Later there will be other projects also and you can choose which project to participate.
I am only member so far but hopefully our tiny team gains more members 😀

networkman, I'm sure that a victory in that manner would be rather sour tasting for everyone here who is devoted to the project and has put in a lot of time and effort trying to get TA to the top 😉.

Zapzilla, others have tried to turn TA's momentum away from RC5 in the past with little effect. As others have said, just switch to a different project yourself and have fun with it. Since being one of the first members to join TA RC5 way back when, I have been involved in no less than 9 dc projects. Do as I have done for a while now and join the project in which you want to contribute, and sit back and hope the key will be found in RC5 soon so that TA's power can be moved over to projects with more benefit. Until that time comes just have fun trying to push TA as far up the rankings as you can in the project you choose.

DanC, I've contributed as much as I can stand to RC5. I've only started it back up because I felt that as one of the first 100 members to join the team I should put in my personal effort to help claim number 1. After that it is up to the current TA RC5 members to maintain their #1 ranking, as I will be devoting my small amount of cpu time to a project that I'm more interested in. I'll be contributing to TA no matter which project I join, so does it really matter which one I participate in? I've remained loyal to TA for nearly 2 years (2 year anniversary this Dec. everybody!), and I don't plan on discontinuing that policy. I wish everyone that stays with RC5 the best of luck, and will look forward to working with all of you on different projects once you find the key in RC5.

from http://www.entropia.com/press/release_09122000.asp:

<< "Our customers pay a fraction of the cost and get results in a fraction of the time normally associated with high performance computing. Entropia also donates significant portions of this power to world renowned non-profit institutes and philanthropic causes for research that benefits us all." >>

I won't participate in anything that was selling (a part of) the computertime i donate to them freely.

I feel the need for some flaming...

I'll just sign off.

Good day to you sir.

Supertweaker, Good point. I agree with you 100%.

From the Entropia Aids website:

"Entropia is a for-profit corporation. In our view, profit is as necessary as oxygen for longevity; while oxygen is essential for life, it is not the purpose of living. Likewise, Entropia's Internet computing service represents "profit with a purpose." Some of the time, Entropia's software will be running commercial tasks on your computer."

Too bad you can't specify non-commercial research only.
