another question, would Win 2003 server speed up my processes or Win2000 server would be faster?

I guess what im trying to ask is, my current server is used for a FTP server/Gaming Server.

Which OS would be best suitable for my needs? Which is faster in processing time and which has higher security?

Also, security would be one of my main reasons to upgrade to Win2003 server.

Thanks for your input.

You're not going to see a signifigant change in performance between the OSes for either of those uses.
which has higher security?
Even though a properly configured 2000 box can be quite secure a 2003 is definetly more secure "out of the box".

Generally speaking 2003 is going to be more secure than 2000 for most applications.

I am running Windows 2000 Server w SP4 on a

Intel8654GBFLK
P4 2.4C
1 512 MB PC2700
2 WD 40 GB IDE
1 Seagate 80 GB SATA

I have a similar set from HP (tc2120) with 2003 Server

There is no difference in performance, but Server 2003 is much easier to install - found all drivers by itself - has a built in firewall. The transition seems like 2000 to XP.

Plus The Great One at Redmond has decreed that no future SPs will be available, however, he believes the Update Rollup meets customer needs more effectively and with less disruption than a new service pack. He is not ending support for Windows 2000. During the Extended Support phase, Microsoft continues to provide security hot fixes and paid support but no longer provides complimentary support options, design change requests, and non-security hotfixes.*

If your main concerns are absolute best performance and security, then a linux distro is by far your best choice. The only issue would be if your gaming server supports linux, which I think most games do at least for the gaming server.
