With my setup, what's better - 1700+ or 2500+

I've read through numerous 1700+ and 2500+ threads, but I still cannot determine which CPU would be best for my motherboard/memory setup:

A7N8X
Crucial PC2700 CAS 2.5

I have the money for a new CPU, but cannot afford new fast PC3200 or better memory.

Would I see a bigger performance increase with a 1700+ running overclocked to 166Mhz FSB, or the 2500+ with a higher multiplier?

Thanks for the responses.

well...

i've decided the extra cache does something...

my 2.4 ghz barton is officially faster than my 2.5 ghz 1700+ at certain benchies...

i need to do all the ones i have listed to determine which is the fastest...

i'm gonna also try to squeeze out a few my mhz from the 2500+

I have both a DUTC3 1700+ and a retail Barton 2500+ both clocked at 2300MHz. While the 2500+ does pull ahead in some benchies, I don't think it was worth the extra money.

What does a 2.3 GHz Barton post as in ... well... POST? Does it say something like "Athlon XP 3400+" or something?

:p If I ever get a Barton I just wanna see that so I can brag about having a 3400+

on my a7n8x delux It just posts at 2300mhz. On the other hand if you want the name to show up back it down 100mhz and it shows up at 3200+ I just want the extra mhz. If you can program your bios maybe that you can do it?

OK, since you all seem to feel that the 1700+ is the way to go, even with my "slow" RAM, from where are you getting your good CPUs? Newegg? SVC? any recommendations?

I got mine from pcsupplysource.com but I don't think they have anymore 0310WPMW in stock anymore. You can try SVC since they are guaranteeing (sp?) that you are gonna receive a 0319

That's some misinformation... take a look at benchmarks and compare Mhz to Mhz... the Barton is ALWAYS faster than an equally clocked T-Bred

i meant the extra cache does next to nothing because a i can get my 1700+ to 2.4Ghz, as where not too many bartons can get to 2300. the extra 100Mhz compensates for less cache. i read a review (i dont really feel like looking for it right now) that showed the barton to be about 3.5-4% faster at equal clock speeds in a series of benchies. keeping in mind that 1700+ OC better than 2500+, why spend the extra cash and get equal performance?

hey i got two of those crucial pc2700, and i can clock it at pc3200 speed. 200fsb with timing of 3-3-3-6 on my a7n8x. so good luck with your sticks.

well, rather than spend good money on computer upgrades, me and the lady are off to vegas. so, i overclocked instead.

my last board didn't overclock very well, so it was much to my surprise that my little 1600+ hit 2000+ speed. with a 159 Mhz FSB and a little extra juice, here are some numbers:

PC Mark 2002: before - 4320 CPU/3919 MEM/ 857 HDD and after - 5111 CPU/4506 MEM/872 HDD

SiSoft Sandra 2002: before - XP 1600+ CPU numbers with PC2700 MEM numbers and after - XP 2000+ CPU numbers with PC3000 MEM numbers.

i couldn't benchmark 3D Mark 2001 because it doesn't like DirectX 9.

so, the moral of the story: why upgrade the computer when you can just overclock it and jaunt off to vegas with a pretty lady and booze it up while gambling?

The latest build will run under DX9.

well, i downloaded build 330 of 3dmark 2001se and that doesn't want to work with dx 9.0. i was getting numbers between 10 and 11000 before. i'm guessing somewhere around 13000 with the new setup. more importantly, i'm looking at a significant increase in fps with ut2k3.

I can't get 3DMark2001SE to run either. It griped at DirectX 8.1b, it griped at 9.0b, and I said the heck with it.

Tetsuo316, when did you get those Crucial PC2700 modules, and are they 512Mb ones? The ones from early this year, as in ~January, were not cooperative with nForce2 and didn't want to run PC2700 speeds.

mech, they're 256MB modules. i did buy them earlier this year, but not sure exactly when. they work fine at 2700 speeds and seem to work just as well at 3000 speeds even at cas 2!

btw, for the curious, HardOCP ut2k3 benchmark reports an average increase of 13 fps when i overclock the system including the vid card from 275/550 to 285/585.
