<< Dec. 28--CHICAGO--And what should consumers expect when the Porsche Cayenne rolls into showrooms next fall as a 2003 model, the first sport-utility vehicle from the German maker of high-performance sports cars?
"It will be a fun vehicle that goes like stink, is king of the highway and will kick the BMW X-5's butt," says Porsche Cars of North America President Fred Schwab.

Schwab provided the Midwest Automotive Media Association (MAMA) with an update of the long-awaited Cayenne developed with Volkswagen, which will get its own version.

Cayenne will be a little wider and a little lower than a Jeep Grand Cherokee, seat four to five based on choice of bucket or bench seats and offer full-time all-wheel-drive with a transfer case to engage four-wheel low for off-roading.

It will be powered initially by a V-8 engine, with a high-performance twin turbo V-8 and a more mileage-minded V-6 to follow.

The sales target is 25,000 annually, which will double Porsche's U.S. sales. No price but Schwab said the $40,000 to $67,000 BMW X-5 is the target rival.

Schwab said unlike most automakers that produce small, medium, large and behemoth SUVs, Porsche will settle for a mid-size model.

"Toyota [Motor Corp.] has eight SUVs of all sizes, but we're little Porsche and have to have one size that will fit all. Detroit and Japan think big is luxury, but for us luxury doesn't mean huge. If an SUV is big, it isn't fun," he said.

This comment had me rolling😉

So less than 8 inches of ground clearance, based on the fact that it'll sit lower than a Grand Cherokee.

Hmm...SUV with performance/comfort emphasized rather than utility/off-roading capability for $67,000...

OR

An Audi RS4 for Performance/comfort

OR

The New Range Rover?

Sure you could say that the Porsche will be the best of both worlds...but it's a Porsche! I...I...I...I'm speechless!

Give me my real awd Porsche

The Carrera 4S

-hates it when he tries to flame a Sport Utility, but ends up discussing it's feasibility.

LMAO 😀

I think it's gonna kick BMW's butt big time, plus I suspect it's going to be quite a decent offroader, unlike the poseur BMW.

Sweeet! LMAO!

And BMW can fire back with an X5 powered by the same 5.0Litre V8 that powers the M5 and Z8. I'm sure that would give Porsche a run for its money.

But the X5 is still nothing more than a 5-Series wagon on stilts. The Cayenne is a born and bred performance SUV...if you can call it that 🙂 And considering that it has locking differentials and an air-lift suspension, the X5 is gonna be toast.

The Stock Air-lift suspension is kool as hell, tho it's not near a new invention to us vetrain Off-Roaders it is only an aftermarket option,

The locked Diff's have been being done for a LONG time tho stock and aftermarket, most stock lockers are OKAY but there is some aftermarket brands now that make some pretty awesome kits to still allow slippage when not needed and then lock when needed. (By Human crontrol with kits like Airlocker)

<< Is this still what it looks like? >>

God I hope not, that thing is UGLY as sin!

Heh, that's what I thought.

the X5 is gonna be toast.
If that pic really is the Cayenne, I doubt it.

this reminds me of that commercial where the honda suv is trying to get over the little hill but gets stuck even though his friend in a land rover or soemthing like that had no problem. And his wife leans over and says its okay, like he just took a major hit to his manhood or something. For some reason this reminds me of that. I think porshe should stick with what they know best and be carefull to not over expand beyond what they can handle.

<a class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.km77.com/marcas/porsche/911_02/carrera4s/gra/lateral.jpg" target=new>The Carrera 4S</A> What happened to that car, is it just an illusion or is that really dented.

Personally id go with a '75 Carrara RS. Sure, id probobly crash and be killed on the 4th turn, but I still love it.
