Two months before the election, and after months of being out raised, Obama starts pulling ahead of Romney in fundraising. Combined with the recent surge in popularity for the president in nearly all polls, Obama seems to be firmly on track toward reelection.

Interesting tidbit:
Overall, too, Obama remains ahead in the race for cash. The president and the Democratic party have raised a total of just under $740 million this campaign season, compared with roughly $630 million raised so far by Romney for his campaign and the Republican party, according to news releases and disclosures.

While the disparity will no doubt reverse when super packs are factored in, it seems like Obama can hold his own....

The President didn't have to deal with a primary though, so he's been able to raise funds for the big show for a long while. Romney had to fend off the others of his brood before getting in the ring for the heavyweight fight.

You're missing the point...

I'm sure Obama won't have any favors to repay for that...

I thought the standard right-wing line was that Obama was going to finally unmask and go all pro-gay muslim atheist communist black supremacist if reelected. Somehow I don't think the $740 million represents that particular interest group.
His backers are going to be pissed.

Take a look at who is donating to Obama and Romney.

Obama's biggest donors are Microsoft, University of California, DLA PIPER lawfirm, GOOGLE, and Harvard University.

Romney's biggest donors are Goldman Sachs Investment Bank, JP Chase Bank, Morgan Stanley Investment Bank, Bank of America, Credit Suisse Bank.

And you think Obama is the one beholdent to special interests?

Considering he really didn't have anyone opposing him in the primaries, he didn't need to raise a shit load of cash earlier in the year. Now that the conventions are done, let the games begin.

I understand that this was just the last month. My point is that Obama supporters could wait until now to start giving their money, since only a month ago was Ryan even picked for Romney's VP.

Once the race started, then the donations started to come in.

But like the OP mentioned we'll never know about SuperPAC money, so it's hard to weigh the significance of this.

Romney is a Republican. I thought scratching the backs of the rich was standard fare. The lie is that Democrats are for the little people.

But it is only "wrong" for a democrat to take donations.... even though the "conservatives" are the cause of all the massive donations to super pacs. Then when the dems use money OMG THEY WILL OWE FAVORS FOR IT!!! Holy shit hypocritical.

I think it sucks this can of worms was opened by the conservative judges, but to then bitch if the other side has to raise more money to compete with what you created.... wow just wow.
