I wanted to open up a store like that in the US but it's basically impossible to keep it afloat unless it's out in the sticks and you do half your business online. Oh twell.

Hard Off?

Yup.

According to wiki it started as a chain of used book stores called Book Off. They made such a success of it (hundreds of stores across japan) that they began to diversify into other areas and spun off other "used" stores. The Hard in Hard Off, I assume stands for Hardware, the Off from the original Book Off chain is probably a reference to the fact that they sell used items at heavy discounts.

I doubt you could do a store like that here, it sounds like in the videos there are a lot of fake stuff and they take out the parts of the game machines there and then resell them like normal.

Well, not so much the hardware. I just want to sell lots of classic games, create elaborate displays and dioramas for the old stuff, give people a place to hang out, etc.

Also none of the stuff I saw in those videos was fake. Plenty of beat up machines though.

There are a few vintage game stores scattered about here and there. But we just don't have the gaming culture here quite like they do that could support a chain of stores like this. 🙁

I'm not sure I'd want to live in Tokyo, I'd end up spending all my money in places like that.

You make that sound like you would have any left after paying for your regular living expenses. Tokyo is the most expensive city on earth to live in. Doesn't stop me from wanting to move there though.
