Wiring up dishwasher, dented electrical part... am I making a mistake?

This is the forum with the smartest people I know, so I'm asking here.

I bought a dishwasher on clearance at Lowes. Saved a couple hundred bucks. The bottom of the door got bent on the way back when it fell over, c'est la vie. I don't really give a damn, I can straighten it out with a rubber mallet and it's below the point where it affects the seal.

However, this part underneath: (huge tinypic image) http://i36.tinypic.com/15ppaud.jpg
has a dent in it. Should I replace it before I hook it up, or is it ok? I figure it should be fine unless it's now shorted out.

As for the wiring, the old washer was on an orange power cord. I'm reasonably sure the dishwasher plug is a 20amp circuit, but the cord is definitely not rated for 20 amps. I talked to the installation guys at Lowes when I was just there buying the paste and twist caps (more on that in a sec) and he said they just grab cords that are pretty much the same and use them for all their new dishwasher installs. It might not be the most robust choice, but I've always found that there's a certain level of half-ass that can be done safely.

Here's the dishwasher wiring: (huge tinypic image) http://i38.tinypic.com/2wf8jz9.jpg

No connector box, just the wires and what looks like a ground screw. I thought the wires were aluminum so I got the anti-oxidant paste for them, but apparently on closer examination it's just a coating on copper. I still slathered them with paste and connected them using standard twist connectors and wired the ground wire to the screw, all from the old stripped orange cord.

Are things going to end badly? 😀

What's the dishwasher's external IP address? I'll see if I can remote into it and find what's going on with it. While I'm trying to connect, please click Yes or Ok to whatever plugin popups may appear on your dishwasher, this pertains to the software I'm using to remote into the system.

While we are waiting, can I please confirm your contact information in case we get disconnected...

I loled.

That is a capacitor, and if it was mine, I would replace it as long as it wasn't real expensive. Is there any fluid leaking out? Doesn't look like a major dent, so I would think not.

However, I don't believe it will affect the operation of the dishwasher. It's meant to store current to assist the motor in starting. I believe it will still function just fine. The capacitor that is.

Sorry to be vague, but my experiences with dented capacitors is nil.

Eh, didn't read past the cap situation. I think you're going to be just fine.

It doesn't look too bad of a dent, and like boomerang said if it is leaking you might want to replace it, otherwise it should be ok. I have many a denter cap that has worked well for many years.

I'm gonna replace the cap, I'd just rather not have to do it this moment/week.

Awesome. I'm gonna go put it in place and hook up the water.

I need another plumbing part to connect it to the water supply. I'll see if they have caps at lowes while i'm at it.

A small city was destroyed today in what had initially been believed to be an atomic explosion. Further analysis traced the source of the horrific disaster to a damaged dishwasher flux capacitor. It is believed that upon power-up, the capacitor caused a recursive temporal implosion, ultimately causing the nucleons in the capacitor to revert to their previous state: Pure energy. The surrounding regions were flashed with a gamma radiation burst, and a Level 5 Zombie Alert has been issued. A Level 5 Zombie Alert indicates the presence of Hulkified radioactive zombies. All viewers are advised to leave the area as soon as possible.

Ohhhhhhh shhhhhhiiiiiiiiiiiii-

Get yourself some electrical tape too. Wrap it all around the wires and see if you can pull the cover off of your old machine and at least try to rig it in place. I am not too fond of wires just being exposed, even if they will never be touched or moved. <<<<<< Used to install dishwashers for a living. And as for the flux capacitator, I wouldn't worry about it. It appears that you did not puncture the skin, so you should be okay.

Peace

RALEIGH, NC (AP) - AUGUST 16TH
Hundreds of internet forum users have assembled in front of a computer enthusiast website's Raleigh headquarters, AP reports. The "ATOT"ers, as they call themselves, are preparing to attack the Hulkified zombies that were created in an early morning blast in rural Tennessee. One forum nerd was quoted as saying "It'll be a cold day in 'ell before I die fighting a bloody 'ulkified zombie." Various other forum nerds were seen pelting the user with loose "H" keys from 1980's IBM AT keyboards.
Most of them are armed with nothing more than prop lightsabers and medieval weaponry. A small riot broke out when several members began chanting "For the Horde." It is believed the opposing faction misheard the chant as "whore" and began to fight in retaliation. Both sides deny the story and claim it is much more complex in nature.
Tom Welling and several young East Asian starlets have both filed restraining orders on the mob for unknown reasons.

That connection really needs to be inside some kind of box and the wire needs to be clamped at the entrance of the box so that no force can be pulled on the wire nuts. I would hard wire the dishwasher using romex, 12 gauge instead of a power cord.

Yes, and I'd be worried about the wires chafing and getting cut going throught the opening in that box. The clamp amdskip is talking about does double duty. Securing it and making sure it can't get cut.

What we're talking about.
