Wiring a ceiling fan (fan speed control)

OK, I know ... two hots. One for lighting and one for the fan.

The lighting is easy.

But to control the fan speeed from a control .... is anything special needed? I plan on using a fan control on the wall ... is that all there is to it? Do you set the fan speed to high on the fan/light unit and then use the wall control to control the speed?

I know this may sound dumb, but I can't ind info on the matter anywhere.

I plan on wiring my family room soon and want to make sure I have what I need to do so.

EDIT:
Example of a control:

EDIT 2:
Reading about Lutron fans, it sounds like they simply put a dimmer on the wall and some sort of special ocntrol is needed where the fan mounts to the ceiling.

That one you linked to is only good for 1.25 Amps. That's the only thing to worry about. I think they make units that will fit in a single box, but has controls for the light and fan. If you're going from scratch, it would be best to have a double box just to be sure.

BTW, why do you want a ceiling fan? I've never had any use for them myself.

I've been reading up on this matter. Ceiling fan motors are not big. The rating on the switch is for hte motor only, not the lighting ... so it should work fine. I actually saw a switch by lutron that can control four ceiling fans ... and it's "rated" at 2 amps. Kinda shocking to see ... but it should work out fine. As long as they gethte UL stamp of approval ... it should be fine 😉

12 foot ceiling in my great room(top of hte tray ceiling) .... don't have forced air. So, in part to gett the warm air down in winter and in part to get some air circulation. We could probably do without it, but now is the time to do it. Room is approx 20x24, so two chandoliers and a fan are going in there. I think .....

The answer is both.

As a side note:
Some fans come with a remote, but that would greatly reduce our choices in fan. I think i noticed 1 out of all of Home Depots stock that had a remote. Great idea but rarely seen.
