Wireless woes

Well I just moved houses and the office is in the basement. The laptop is usually connected through the wireless network. There is nothing special about it.

I have BellSouth as the ISP for DSL connection and am using one of their 2Wire routers. The previous house the connection was fine and if connected directly through an ethernet cable I get the proper speed so it leaves me with the fact that it's the wireless signal.

I think the problem is a few things:

1) I'm using the wireless card in the laptop (Dell Latitude D600)
2) The finished basement has all metal studs so is probably interfering

So what suggestions would work? A repeater? An external usb card like the Netgear wireless USB 2.0 adapter WG111 v2?

So what is the problem, no connection, dropped connections, slow speed? You said it worked fine if hardwired into the 2Wire router. Have you tested using the wireless connection, but sitting in the same room as the router?

yes I did test it sitting in the same room only about 15 feet from the router. The speed is slow downloads are at only about 12-15 kbps.
