Wireless w/o router?

I currently my DSL into my WinXP PC, and then from there run a cable to my wife's laptop. Have to turn on my computer for her to access DSL or print from the laser, but that's no problem.

Question is, if I put 802.11b cards in the PC and laptop can they interact with each other directly? Or do I need a wireless router as an intermediary? Don't feel like shelling out the money for a router at the moment, so the only goal is to get rid of the cable between computers.

There are Wireless Routers on sale for the same (or few $$$) as a good Wireless Card.

You can do an Ad-Hoc Wireless connection between two Client Cards, but the result is usually Quirky (especially when it is involved DSL with PPPOE software).

If you get a Router your general Internet connection will be better since you will be able to ?ditch? the PPPOE software and be connected all the time by the Router?s PPPOE log On.

If you already have a Router Get a cheap Wireless Router and use it has an Access Point/Switch.

Sounds good. Haven't done any networking beyond HomePNA. I suppose I plug the DSL modem and PC into ports on the wireless router, while the laptop gets a client card? This'll let the laptop access DSL without the PC on, and let the laptop print from the PC's printer when I turn on the PC?

You should be able to share the internet connection from the desktop to the laptop, but it would be eariser and prop better to get a router w/ AP built in
