Wireless update.

The new Wireless equipment that is coming out right now is:

802.11a. Uses the 5G transmission band, and it is capable to provide max, bandwidth of 54 Mb/sec.

Problems with the 802.11a. 5GHz does not penetrate walls as well as 2.4GHz, so what is gained with the Bandwidth is lost in obstacles decay. Since it is using 5GHz, there is compatibility problem with the current WIFI (2.4GHz).

It is however less affected by the noise generated by other appliances on the 2.4GHz band.

The new proposed standard 802.11g, which is now extended to 54 Mb/sec., will use 2.45Ghz, and will be compatible with the current installations.

Seems that finally it is going to be agreed upon to use this standard.

Just want you guys to know, in case you are planning for future Wireless.

Only one note, I thought that 802.11a was 57 vs 802.11g's 54? (IMHO the loss in speed is more than made up for in interoperability)

Not 57, actually theres a couple of numbers going around. Turbo mode. 72 Mb and 108, doubling the 54. Neither is accurate. Turbo mode with the Proxim product is around 40 Mb realworld. THese are just my numbers however it was an early ship product with immature drivers. Drivers were shaky to begin with so it should be faster.

It will be interesting to see what the benches of the .11g product are.

The compatibility of .11g makes it more attractive than .11a, but I heard the drawback is that it will be much more expensive. I don't know if this is correct or not...

So with .11g, you would buy a new router/AP to replace your .11b one, then when you add new clients, you just use .11g adapters? Then they all work together?

Thanks!
