You definitely want a sub with the R50s if you're using them for home theater or gaming. They simply don't go down all that far.

I second this. I've got my crossover set to 80Hz and sub capped at 90Hz, and it sounds great like that. I've read that 70Hz is best for the R50, but my receiver jumps from 60 to 80, so I went on the safe side.

Hmm, besides plugging everything in correctly, what should I do for settings, I am pretty sure I will get the two R50's, receiver, and a SUB, and wait on the center....what sub should I get... 100$~~

I am overlooking another type of setup around this price range?

Not really. Polk has excellent bang for the buck. You might consider trolling Craigslist for a bit to see if anyone is selling something used locally.

At the price range he is looking at, he is better off not putting any money towards a sub. He is better off with bigger mains.

I'm not sure I agree with that. Even if you've got a rocking set of mains (which I do!), that subwoofer is still going to be handy. But, you're right - the OP needs to spend more than $100 on it, or find an amazing deal on CL.

What is your budget for mains+sub? I am proposing you buy just mains for that budget. Think about it, a pair of speakers, properly cared for, can last 10-15 years. You are better off buying better speakers then anything else.

You live in a condo. Sub and Condo don't mix since most of the bass is going to be in other units rather than your own due to wavelength.

Wait for the R50s to go on sale again at Frys :)

amazon has it for 133 each, free shipping

You think 2 R50s + Onkyo Receiver would be enough? Yeah, I do not exactly want subs, as it may piss off neighbors above me (I am on first floor with no one around my unit, just above).

You can get some towers that have good bass extension. Granted you will pay for it. For example the Focal 1037be IIRC goes to ~40 hz range. Granted they are $13k/pair, but it is just an example.

You can easily get other towers that do similar (but not past ~60-70 hz). The R50's are good entry level, but if it were me I would check audiogon.com and get some good used towers+receiver.
