Wireless Speed Issues

I have a cheapo (Airnet) 54g PCI adaptor and a Netgear G router. Windows say I'm connected at 54mbps and my signal strength and quality are all over 90%. However my download speeds over the air are roughly 1/3 of the speed I get if I connect it by wire.

I'm sure the crappyness of the Airnet is somewhat to blame but would a higher quality adaptor perform just as well as if I ran a wire or is there still going to be some kind of loss.
 
there will be SOME loss, but it's not normally significant. I would check noise in the area. If your band is noisy, then you may miss packets, get retries, extra managment packets, etc. change channels, try 1, 6, and 11 first.
 
I'm using 11 and according to Network Stumbler my router is the only one in range thats using 11.

I forgot to mention I'm using a high-gain antenna by Hawking that is connected to the Airnet card in my PC.
 
If by getting 1/3 you mean 16Mb/sec. it is Not so bad.

That is the normal "Speed" of cheappo 802.11g Wireless.

The better ones might get 22Mb/sec. at best.

Well I was testing out download speeds so I downloaded Windows XP SP2 form Microsoft. If I used the computer that was connected by wire IE was downloading at roughly 1.4mbps. When I switched to Wireless, it was reporting around 500-600kpbs. I realize the whole bit vs. byte rating system but it seemed like a very large difference in speeds.
