Hi Everybody,

I'm new here and I've got a few questions about connecting a wireless "something", I'm not sure what yet, to a dsl modem/router combo.

Here's a text diagram I hope it looks ok:

<-dsl->[router/modem combo]<-long cable->[???]<-[2 wired computers + 1 wireless]

The router/modem combo has 3 wired computers hooked up already and has one free port.

The long cable will be about 200-250 feet.

The ??? is what I'm confused about. A wireless access point doesn't seem to have ports for wired computers to connect to. A wireless router on the other hand does have the ports for the wired computers but can I connect a router to a router?

Also I'd like to use WPA-PSK for the 1 wireless connection. I think windows XP on the laptop can be setup to do that, but I assume the wireless access point or router will have to handle WPA-PSK too.

So do I need to buy a regular network switch + a wireless access point or can I just get a wireless router?

Thanks in advance

I think you need to buy a switch + AP. A router will not work very well.

Welcome to the Network forum.

If your Modem router can be configured to work as a Modem Only you can buy a Cable/DSL Router. Otherwise you need an Access Point.

In such situation I prefer a Cable/DSL Router since it is cheaper than an Access Point, and Cable/DSL Routers are usually better than a Modem/Router all in one Combo. Cable/DSL Routers have better capacities in the filtering and Virtual server management
