Wireless Signal Range Issues

I have a PC in my house that uses a wireless-b USB network adapter. It is 50 feet from the wireless-g router it connects to the Internet with. There are 3 walls and a tile fireplace between the router and the PC.

Obviously, there are some signal strength issues. Is this normal for a setup like this? What are some inexpensive ways to fix this?

The user of this computer is very cheap and hesitant to switch to BPL networking.
