I bought a Linksys wireless router with four wired ports. I have all my desktops hooked into the wired ports and im using the wireless for my laptop. Im looking for adivce on setting up security on my system, I dont want the neighbors to see all the pron ive downloaded LOL

Im running XP Pro on my desktops and Win 98 on my laptop.

Also what is a good program (preferably freeware) that will show my signal strenght?

Limit MAC addresses is one thing you can do. You probably also want to use WEP, although it gives you very little security.

Turn off beacon trasmits
limit it by mac addresses
enable wep (easy to break, but in practice who is going to sit for a week to collect enough weak packets to break it?)

Most cards should come with a utility that will monitor signal strength too, but if you don't have one try www.netstumbler.com

If I noticed someone in my apartment building with a WAP running I would just for the hell of it, and it would be cheaper and less work than buying another card and setting up my current Linux router as a WAP =)
