Wireless router

i am a newbie and not very computer literate so please keep the terminology simple.

basically my question is this
- i have a desktop pc upstairs and one downstairs in the basement
- the upstairs pc has a Linksys router that i use with my laptop for which i have purchased a wireless card
- the downstairs is used for my home theatre as an HTPC
- i happen to have another router and I want to hook it up to the downstairs pc in order to pick up the internet signal from the upstairs router
- i guess i could buy a card for the downstairs pc, but since i have this extra router i want to know if it can be set up to receive the signal from upstairs and feed into the pc

No point in the 2nd router. I would just buy another wireless card for your downstairs pc, and configure it to pull from the upstairs router.

You could setup the 2nd router, but that will just add another 'hop' to the internet, and is more configuration than a newbie such as yourself would have to endure..

Welcome to the Network Forum.

You can not use a Wireless Cable/DSL Router as a Client unless you have one of the very few Routers that are WDS capable (Buaffalo Tech. and few Belkin Models).

So you have two wireless routers and are looking to connect them. Jack's got your advice above. You could also trade one of the routers for another wireless card-win/win with a friend.

Stop thinking about the parts you have and think about the solution to the problem. If your router has wired ports as well, then you simply need to run a couple of cables. One potential fix would be to move the router downstairs. It may limit the range on the wireless connection, though.
