Wireless router using dial-up.

I have a wireless router and a 802.11a/b combo card that I used to run with my old IBM TP 570. I now have a Dell Inspiron 1100 and I can't get the card to work correctly. I can't remember the settings I used before. I can get it to connect to my desktop and share files, but I can use Internet explorer. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? I really only want to use it to sit in the family room and surf online.
If there is a way to print to my desktop printer, that would be great, but I won't push my luck if I can just get online.
Thanks for help!!

A little more info would help...

1. Are you using security?
2. Can your desktop surf?
3. Can you ping anything from the laptop?
4. What type of equipment is it? Do you have the latest drivers for the card?

The answers to these would help us to help you.

By security, do you mean virus software, or firewall? I have the firewall turned off. My desktop is fine. Everything works. I am not sure how to "ping" Can you explain? I am using a Compaq Presario Desktop and a Dell Inspirion 1100. Both are running XP Home. The router is a CompUSA with a Orinoco Combo card. The drivers are current from the website.
Thanks for any help.
