Quote from a link im my previous post: Extending the Distance of Entry Level Wireless Network.
Scenario 1: One floor house, the living room has a cathedral ceiling, and all the rest of the house is basically around the Living room.
A Ceiling Antenna was installed a few feet bellow the Apex of the ceiling. The result Wireless coverage of the whole house and 60' around the outside. (The Wireless Router is near the computer, the Antenna is connected with extension coax).
Cost: $45 for a Good Antenna + $35 for coax cable.

As for Boosting Wireless 802.11x with External Antenna.
The usual Antenna that comes with Entry Level Wireless is 2db omni directional. It is possible to find a better Omni Directional Antenna that might be rated 6db or more.
Outdoor with No obstructions, or indoor in a Warehouse type of environment (i.e. big open space) a better Antenna might provide a significant Extension of Range.
Indoor in a regular Home (walls, furniture, etc.).
You probably will gain only few feet.
BTW. I am 6?1? I do not need a pedestal.
