Wireless Question

I'd like to know if you only have 1 computer on a wireless router can that single computer (it's a desktop) be setup wirelessly?

I've never done that before. My main computer has always been wired and now a friend of mine has run into a situation where being wireless would be the best solution.

You can, but it's not recommended.

I have a wireless PC, and a lot of the time when I mess with the Belkin router settings I either lose connection to the router or the router's configuration utility becomes "stuck" and it doesn't even work from a wired PC until you reboot it.

If anything happens to the wireless connection my friend can temporarily run the ethernet cable across the floor to the computer.

The problem is that there is no phone jack on the wall where the computer is and of course it is not safe to run cables across the floor. (Especially since there is a sick family member there.)

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Preferably ones that doesn't cost any money? 🙂

Install a regular NIC into a PCI slot ($5 on sale).

Load the drivers and disable the Card in the device manager.

Keep a spare CAT5e that can reach from the computer to the Router ($5).

If any thing goes wrong enable the NIC put temporarily the cable, Configure, and take it Off again.

I.e. secure functionality for $10.
