WIRELESS PROBLEMS USING NETGEAR ROUTER

Hi everyone,

I have recently upgraded to AOL Platinum and i connect to the internet using a wireless netgear router. Internet seems to be working fine, no problems.

Now, i am trying to connect 3 laptops to the router using the laptops wireless cards. The router is secured with a WEP key. All 3 laptops pick up the netgear router, but when i attemp to connect to it, it asks for the key so i type it in. But after about 30seconds to a minute of aquiring a network address it stops and shows limited or no network connectivity.

Can anybody shine some light as to why this is happening and how i can get the laptops to connect. I would also like to set up a wireless network.

All help very much appreciated.

Cheers,

Mo

Try connecting without encryption. Turn off WEP and see if you can connect the laptops.

Then, copy the actual WEP's Hex string from the Router to the Laptops instead of using passphrase.

You should also go into the "Advanced Wireless Settings" and specify each wireless card's MAC address. Normally, manufacturers' place a sticker on the back of each adapter with the MAC address of that particular adapter on it.

(1) Sign into the router's URL (192.168.1.1) If you've never done this before, the default "User name" is "admin" and the default "Password" is "password". You should change these, as well as enabling 128-bit WEP, or better yet WPA/WPA2 if your router and adapters' support them.
(2) Click on "Wireless Settings" under "Advanced"
(3) Click-on the "Setup Access List" button
(4) Enter the name of each Device (each PC) along with the MAC address of the each PCs' respective adapter
(5) Click "Apply
(6) Wait for the router to update the settings (For some reason NETGEAR router's seem to take quite awhile to save their settings (approximately 30-45 seconds)
(7) Logout

That should do it.

Thank you all for your replies.

I turned off WEP and tried connecting and it worked, i was able to get on to the internet. I then copied the actual WEP's Hex string from the Router to the Laptops instead of using passphrase and tried connecting again and it worked.

I havent added the MAC addresses yet, but i will do just to prevent any problems.

I appreciate all the help.

Cheers,

Mo.
