Wireless Problem

have my notebook in my house and I run it wireless off my router upstairs. Everything has always been working fine. This weekend I went away and the house I connected to had a cable modem. I plugged their modem into my notebook and away i went. When I got home I could not connect to the internet via wireless. I have taken my notebook to various hotspots that I have used in the past and nothing works, just says no wireless connection available. Did I screw something up by connecting to the cable modem? My router in the house is fine, it is broadcasting just fine. My wife is able to connect to it via her notebook. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Porbleemo/Bigjimbo - he doesn't even have a wireless connection, therefore he can not even recieve an IP address from his router via DHCP . .

My suggestion: Connect to your router via cat5 and see if you can connect to the net. If so, then your problems is just narrowed down to either your laptop or router's wireless settings. See if you know someone that can come over and try to connect to your AP, if they are able to - then your problem is your laptop's settings.

There is no on/off switch for wireless on the emachine. Being new to all this, I do not understand why i would need to reinstall anything if it was working fine and then all the sudden just quit. Is it really that easy to lose?

SuRgEoN.

Imagine a Doc. that says.

I do not know why I should give him Medication he was OK before he got sick.

Ok...my question is this: Because I connected to a cable modem and added my laptop to that network, would it change my previous setting? It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and now, even net stumbler cannot locate any active ap's

1. If you connected in the weekend through the Wireless, did you change any thing in the Wireless settings?

I.e. Under normal situation a correctly install and protected Wireless should not connect else where without changing the Wireless parameter (SSID etc.)

Check your Wireless settings to make sure that they are compatible with your Network.

2. If you connected to the Cable Modem via cable (not Wireless).

When you connect through a Wireless Cable /DSL Router your Laptop obtains private IP that is compatible with the subnet of your Router.

When you connected it else it change the IP to whatever is compatible with the other Network if you plugged it directly to the Modem it obtained an external ISP IP address..

It seems that something is not working correctly in you Network Settings, and it is not reverting back to obtain you private IP.

Check manfully the Network setting: http://www.wown.info/articles_tutorials/wxpnicch.html

If you can detect any thing connect the Laptop with a wire directly to the Router make it working and try the Wireless again.

I have done everything you said Jack. Yes I connected directly to the cable modem. All I did was plug in the cat5 cable and started surfing the net. I have check every setting that you mention and everything is working properly. Anything else I should try?

Let me first start off by saying thank you to all of you who helped me out. Let me secondly say I expect to be flamed now...Im a true noob. After spending hours tonight trying to figure out what the heck the problem was I decided to get out my manual...turns out the Fn + F2 key turns on/off the wireless setting..Ooops. Don't know how in the world i turned it off. Again, thank you guys for your patience.
