i don't have a lot of experience with wireless network, can anyone help figure what went wrong?

i have a wireless setup in my basement. It has been giving me problem these last few weeks. I can only connected to the internet half the time. My computer tell me that i have excellent connection to the router( i can also ping the router) but can't connect to the net. So i turn off the wireless router and ran the cable to the modem. If i'm lucky sometime it will connect, if not Windows tell me i have limited/no connectivity. When that happen the thing i can do is wait 2 or 3 hours before it would connect. I have a suspection that it is the modem, but would like a second opinion. anyone have a possible solution?

My setup: Linksys wireless router model:BEFW11S4, modem is a Ambit Model:60678EU and my ISP: Comcast

Doesn't sound like a wireless issue. If you take the router out of the picture, and still have intermittent limited connectivity, I would look at signal strength on the coax feed. Some cable modems are more sensitive than others, but any of them will start to lose signal if you split the line a few times. You want a nice clean "home run" from the service tie-off at the outside wall all the way to the cable modem. The definition of a "home run" is no more than one splitter, and make it a high quality one. If you have to have more than one splitter, or an unusually long run from the tie-off to the modem, you can put a line amplifier on. They sell them at Radio Shack for about 30 bucks.

If none of these things are true, then it is also possible that Comcast is having problems. Look at your router admin page and find the "WAN status". Get the IP of your gateway (the first Comcast server you talk to) and ping it a few times. Losing packets? Could be that Comcast has issues in your neighborhood or at your residence.

anything at radioshack is over priced (and is a piece of crap but thats another discussion that has been discussed already on anandtech), look online for cheaper....Not only that what pci card are you using on your computer?

Well, that's true, but when you figure out you need a part, and want to get it before your Saturday evaporates, it ain't a bad place.
