Wireless networks

I was out of town last weekend and was trying to configure my Mom's email on her laptop. Well, as soon as I went into her email program it connected to the internet wirelessly. I opened network connections and saw two wireless networks. One was secure but the other was not so I allowed her computer to go online to try to get her email configured properly.

My question is, could the person whose internet connection I was using see what I was doing? Could he/she have record of passwords I may have entered? I'm pretty sure since there was no security on this network that the person who set it up probably isn't savvy enough to figure these things out but I was just curious.

BTW-They had a Netgear router which I was able to login to using the default password. Talk about stupid... I didn't change any settings just checked to see if they had changed it and logged out.

We could only hope they could trace you using their network connection. However it is very unlikely unfortunately.

Actually, the basic netgears have logging enabled, so they could check out where you went, and look at the dhcp records, and get a mac address off that. Who knows what else.

That's not going to yield anything though. I'll have to look at the logging on my router and see what's in there.

Why? Was it wrong to do that?

If they had something set up there to monitor connections, then yes.

Have we learned anything about not walking into people's houses uninvited just because they leave their doors open?

No, I'd say this was more like borrowing their bicycle to go to the store.
