Does encryption (WEP/WPA) slow data transfers as compared to unecrypted transfers?

If I limit the MAC's that can access the router, doesn't that effectively prevent anyone from war driving on my router and thus accessing my stuff?

Thanks for the input

I could not find the answer to either question specifically, but instead implications

according to him:
3. Switch On the MAC Filter and enter the MACs of your system. ? This will only allow your hardware to connect to the system.

so then .... what's the additional advantage of using a WEP/WPA key? assuming i'm in a situation where there are a constant number of laptops in the WLAN (i.e. home setting)

WEP slows down the transfer speed because the cpu in the box has to do the encryption and decyption for each piece of data that comes though. Cisco units have mastered this and take the lowet hit in throughput compared to others and your SOHO units.

MAC address alone is a deterrent against casual intruders. However it is very easy to Hack it.

So it is a personal casual whether it is enough or you need more.
