Wireless networking without router?

I know very little about networking. I do know two computers can be cable networked with just a crossover cable and two net cards. Can two computers be networked together with just two 802.11b wireless cards? Is a router a must have for wireless networking?

The equivalent to two computers using a crossover cable is two computers each using a Client Wireless Card configured in Ad-Hoc Mode.
