wireless networking question

i use netgear mr814 wireless router and actiontec pcmcia wirelss card for the laptop. i manually change the ip add. and i'd make sure the gateway is the router's ip is the same on my laptop,now the dns server is my isp,right? and i type those to the wireless pcmcia tcp/ip. how come i can see the main pc icon but whenever i put the username and password it won't let me even i change the router password to none, further more i could ping each other but when i tried to use the internet on the laptop, it's a no go,i mean it won't connect to the main pc. even when there's a internet connection icon on my laptop, why is these?

ps. i hope i explain it right
i use win xp pro on my pc and xp home on the laptop and both use ms firewall and sometimes none at all.
 
If your router is set to get all IP info from your cable modem, you would find it much easier to just run DHCP on the router and give IP's to both your computers. The Gateway should be the IP of your router. The DNS server is not the IP assigned to you, rather the IP address of their DNS server(s). Setting up your router to receive IP info from your cable/dsl company is the easiest way to go!

Remember that with XP, you have to add the laptop user name and password as a user on your desktop and visa versa.
 
alright, iwill try that later. btw, i don't cablr or dsl just dial up and all i want is the wireless to get the clear access to the main pc. where can i put the username and password of the laptop to the pc,in the router software?
 
it's still no go. i set the laptop on obtain automatic and use the dhcp and also the main pc(obtain automatic with dhcp. now, the router i have to figure out. there is a link but i can't access anymore and/nor see the main pc. this is difficult for me. maybe i should go with a wireless switch or wireless access point and use my 10/100 hub. what do you think?

the 2nd and the laptop can't access the main pc bec. of the password. i even add the laptop and the 2nd'ips to the lan setting
